been to a few local fish mongers and it would seem to be cheaper to buy things like mackerel there and freeze it but would it effect the bait scent/quality

the stuff you buy from tackle shops is blast frozen.when you freeze it at home it is to slow and will always be softer than blast froozen.

I have one observation though? Does it really matter to the fish?!!
How are the fish to know the difference between blast frozen and freezer frozen? Some even say that manky old fish catch them more??
I agree that
1)the fishmongers fish are usually very fresh (I just check their eyes are clear)
2) I like to support the local industries, oh and
3) THEY ARE CHEAPER!!!
Unless someone can honestly say they catch 100% more on blast frozen then I know where I'm going!

Morrisons Maci can be up to four days old, Crap for fishing never mind eating, Mushy maci dont stay together very well in the drink. i catch and freeze my own, its ok providing you dont try to freeze too many at a time,

Get a flat metal tray and leave it in the freezer. When you have mackerel you want to use as bait then cut the flanks off, wrap them and place them flat on the freezing tray back in the freezer.
When frozen pack them normally into the freezer. You will get a nice firm 'fresh' bait when they defrost. It is excellent in the winter.
Do use the mackerel you catch at the end of the day or mackerel that has been left in the cool box. Dont try and freeze stuff that has been out ion the sun all day.

I have to agree with maxwell, that freezing to many at one time does not work. You tend to find the ones in the middle are mushy,as they have taken longer to freeze and are only good for there head

Just one other nerdy point , i get my Mrs to keep all the bread bags, good for keeping the maci in, one per bag in the freezer :nerd:

i freeze a few mackerel, but fillet them first,NEVER wash any blood off, just wrap the fillets in cling film a dozen or so at a time on a metal baking tray, they are usually top notch, very ocasionally if the mackerel have fed on whitebait and are stuffed full they can be a bit soft...........catching them early morning seems to be better i keep the heads and freeze seperately, u cant beat a head

Heh, I caught all my stingers on frozen-pre-filleted mackerel. They can't get enough of 'em. Was out fishing fresh fillets too

I filleted half my mackerel last year, you can get a lot more in the freezer that way, never tried the baking tray technique but i'll give that ago this year, seems to make sense to me, Thats why i like fishing single lure under the pier, dont matter how bad you got that Mackerel fever, you can only catch one at a time, i never go home with too many to freeze at once,

I have had Fresh baits on one rod, with frozen on the other... I have seen it a few times that the frozen outfishes the fresh by as much as 5 to 1... I reckon it might be the freezing breaks it down a bit so it flakes a bit leaving a scent trail downtide... I've been down to my last frozen fillet and had 3 fish on it, with the fresh untouched... weird

all the rays seem to be attracted to frozen baits ......fish strip ,sandeel etc...frozen pout, got something to do with the freezin process that turns the buggers on ;D Spot on! Tried fresh sandeels for the ray and not a patch on quality frozen.. Same with pout/gar/mac fillet, it's 'ok' fresh but freeze it and its the nutz for the rays... Freezing, breaks the molecular make up down, fast, which in turn, defrosted, releases a slightly stronger/different scent to fresh.. (just my opinion).... I would rather my own frozen fillets over morrisons 'fresh' any day... I fillet within seconds of capture, straight on to ice in a cool box then home, quick as, 2 fillets wrapped(clingfilm) together slapped on pre-frozen metal trays, no more than 20 mac at a time.. worth pre-freezing a load of ice packs, as well, to place over trays once full Perfect bass snacks if done right........ I freeze the heads down in bags of 3 in another freezer... head are awful bait never had a thing on them ;D Also as Bk16.25 has said dont bother when stuffed with whitebait and also when they have stuffed on plankton! mush on a stick...........The later on in season, the better the quality seems to be......could be something to do with oil content in meat after mac eating the right diet....
