mmm, so whats wrong with Vermiculite? lighty ok all the shops use it but its crap, cant keep worm very long in it just drys it right out , its ok for a day or two but after that its junk ;D Vermiculite is an insulating material(retains-heat) used in lofts etc. If you put it with ragworm as Bk says it dries them out in a few days and after a while if you break the worm in half you notice a fizzing effect(rather than blood), because the worm has eaten it. Ruins worm, Avoid!!. Was explained this some yrs ago by Phil Hyde(rod builder-caster & scientist)..

As Adam G said for long term results nothing works better than in very shallow sea water in litter trays in the fridge. be carefull not to set the temperature too low as ive had them freeze over before and they dont like that much.also in smaller quantities in several trays seems to work best

Cant understand the thinking behind vermiculite. It is epanded mica. Looks like tiny bits of yellow glass but heat it up to 800 degrees and you get the stuff that you see in lofts (i used to make tons of this stuff). Thing is it starts to try and drag its lost moisture back from the atmosphere so it cant do ragworm much good.
