Need your help and opinions guy's, I'm doing a feaseability on replacing the power on my Warrior 165. I know theres a lot of you out there using the engines I have been thinking about. My ideas are revolving around 2nd hand engines 60 to 70 hp ( I have toyed with the evinrude 70 on Bill Highams advert in boats and outboards although he seems to have been advertising these for more than a year) or a 4 stroke around 60hp, but, these are as rare as rocking horse poo! I'm also looking at a new unit, these are the 60hp 4s mariner, the 70 hp Tohatsu tldi 2s which run out at about 5 to 5.5k. What are your opinions and maybe you would consider a different option, please let us know what you think as although this is not going to happen tomorrow its something I cant get my head around
cheers Rich.

the Tohatsu are getting some great reviews.and seem to be at a good price. i have a yami 4 stroke and realy rate it . would be good if you could pick up a good s/h motor the only problem is not knowing how it has been treated in the past. so it is better to go for new if you have the dough and most new lumps have a 5 year garentee which is nice. good luck in your hunt. by the way go for as big a lump as you can you wont regret it.

Buyers market so shop around & drive a hard deal. Fairweathers in Fareham worth a look. Had a chat to the guy at Fareham, very helpfull, made several suggestions and recommended the Suzuki 60/4 with other options being the Mariner 60/4, Evinrude Etec 75/2 (bit pricey) and the Tohatsu 70 & 90/2's. The Suzi came out at about £5.2-5.300, the Mariner at about £5.3-5.400, the cheapest deal would be the Tohatsu70 at £4900 or 90 at £5100. I need to check the insurance as was warned that to exceed the recommended hp may void the insurance! (Didn't know that). said they were all good engines, the Tohatsu were good but a bit noisey compared with the others. Thanks for the info guy's keep it coming I'm sure others are in my position. See you down the club sometime Wayne. Rich.

No worries. You should push them a bit more for discount, you'll often get a few hundred off what they say is best price if you try it. Do not go above makers engine size recommendations, it will negate your insurance & there is no point overpowering your boat. The huge bonus of a new engine is the warranty, i think a few do a 5 year one which is superb, really gives you peace of mind in case anything does fail.

Hi Rich
Few things to look for on a new one is the service intervals and the cost of the service to, soon adds up if you want to keep up the warranty.

as steve has said watch out on the servicing, we see alot of ott servicing but the manufactures insist on it and thay will not honor any warranty claim if it is not up together. and thay check it and go over the failed parts/engine with fine tooth comb. generaly 4 strokes are better on fuel but dearer to service and 2 strokes are cheap to service, but cost more for fuel. so how often do you use the boat and how faw do you travel???
at work the most reliable ones seem to be suzuki, yamaha, and honda. and i think thay all offer long warrantys and the was a rumble of suzuki doing a 7 year one in the near future, but i dont know how true this will be. also the newer evenrudes seem pritty good, 1 boat at work goes to channle islands on his 7m rib with a 175 hp and has very high hours and its never missed a beat. the Tohatsu is unknow to us, but iv not heard a bad word from the people who own them.so thats got to be a good thing. cheers john

I have the Evinrude E-Tec 75 on my 165 - Can't speak highly enough of it, doesn't miss a beat, nice and quiet, economical, compact, plenty of poke... and best of all 3 years between services I want to try this with another Warrior with a 4s 70 Suzuki  , but I dont think they would be too keen, or in for their 5,7,10,15,20,30,40,60,75,92 or 100 hour service... www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-7I00cZUE0
