After an enjoyable day out codding this weekend I want a basic but good boat fishing setup. I'll be codding/bassing with bait and shads around the solent area so biggish tides. We were using 6oz to over a 1lb weights at the weekend.
I'm clueless about what to look for in a boat rod and reel so any pointers to a good combo would be appreciated. Cheers Flyguy

What are you looking to spend?

Upto £150 if that's realistic?

You can get a pretty decent setup for a ton fifty mate, Some of the other guys can probably give some more advice but i would start looking at something like a slosh 30 or an abu 7000 sized reel matched with a 20-30lb class rod for starters.

Cool, so Diawa Sloch 30 it is then! Is 20-30lb rod about right for cod/pollock/bass without killing the fun to much? Also what length is best? Thanks in advance

Go for something around 7 foot with fairly tippy action. much shorter and you will loose the fun of it and much longer you will start to struggle when using bigger leads. Everyone has their favourite rods and everyone will tell you that their rod is better than the next guys so just go into a tackle shop and choose the one you like. You can pick up some really good bits of kit for not a lot of money these days so dont feel like you have to spend a fortune.

i like the longer rods when shading for cod and bass. i use the salt sporting braid 12-20, its on offer at the moment for £60 down from £120. you wont find a better rod for that money. its 8.2ft in length and takes the big strikes of fish. its a quality rod. i use a torium 16 to match it up.
the longer rods defo give an advantage when working shads. but ive never had to use leads over 10oz when wrecking or on the star beds. if your anchoring for conger then thats another set up completly.

Penn 320 LD & Shimano TLD 15/20 both good reels. Rovers had some very good prices on these reels if your near Fareham.

IMO Kenzaki option is not a bad call, although personally I use a light uptide rod for shads & gills because I like the length. I've been using an ABU 7000i (Chinese) for the last 2 years which is fine. I don't like big clunky reels. If you use braid which I think you should, I cant see the need for more than 12 oz. of lead + the lead head on a shad if it has one. Normally 10oz is fine. Whatever you do the likelihood is that you will want to try something different before long as you develop your own style of fishing. We are all different and like different things, so any advice is always coloured by personal preference. On another note the fact that this forum engine is USA based means that the spell checker is not proper English and tries to get one to spell colour, color gets right up my hooter
