Memory seems to serve me that some of the threads I have put on this forum have been stolen and put on other sites. 'Three favourite fish,' springs to mind and others. So are 'visitors' looking on this site to get ideas to put on their sites? Was there a man on 'the grassy knoll' Did Neil Armstrong really walk on the moon? Who knows.....But..... If you want to read a newspaper you have to buy it, why should non members be allowed to browse our content.? Admittedly it doesn't make a Tinkers Cuss of difference if they are members and steal ideas , but at least they have to log in first, and then if content is copied ,perhaps it could be traced? If I wanted to write on other sites I would, but I don't, and I object to people nicking our ideas. TOF Post are copied and pasted else were it happens all the time, only yesterday content from this thread was used by Mr Luxton. One might venture to say that it is often done by the very people the site could do without.
By going behind closed doors will achieve what exactly? This is not a policy making forum what's more many anglers might just learn something of value simply by being able to view the post by the site members, some may even find the content sufficiently interesting that they join the site.

No doubt to draw a conclusion with the opposite meaning to the content.

Possibility springs to mind, and it has already been brought up, is that the guests are members who have not logged .
So have a log in week.
Start a new thread, and ask everyone to log in before they hit the forum, just for one week.
Then you should see how many guests there really are.

I dont know the answer Nick! you could argue it both ways. Is there no way to encourage peeps to register by reward? maybe close down pictures to non members or the classifieds?

Some great thoughts guys. I think we all agree on one thing...that there is no obvious answer. I just thought that it was a shame that 'on-face-value' it looked like only 30+ members were coming in each day. But it is most likely true that the majority - for whatever reason - are viewing and not logging-on. We evidently also have our share of the lurkers....bless-their-cotton-socks. I like the idea of a temporary, trial period closure. Close down one or more boards to members-only and see what happens ? We have that for the Catch Reports, as they are areas of contribution by members that implies a shared ownership; join us if you wish to view them.... it is free and takes only moments to acheive. Now this board (General Discussions) has undoudtely become quite topical, within our walls and outside ...which is at the same time both hillarious and proof of its serious value. Now I have to thank those who have been creating the topics and contributing/adding to them. There will be many many anglers out there that will be pleased to see that we are starting & debating something that impacts on us all; with the certain knowledge that they will not be jumped-on, bullied and insulted by the Commercial and pro-Commercial Fishing lobby that exists on (for example) WSF. So the proposal is for a temporary closure of this board, a trial period of 2 weeks, to begin on Friday 25th Oct. If nothing else it will be interesting to see what happens...... If there is anyone who feels compelled to swear then please pm me first, so we can discuss without a massive bun-fight But otherwise fill-your-boots guys, let me know what you think. We shall also look at what happens during the trial period. I would hope that some of the big-hitters on this board will create some of their best stuff during that trial closed period.... let the debates begin

Hi Nick, been away for a bit so missed this, i'd say the catch reports and General fishing discussions are the most popular/regularly viewed parts of this forum so yes, i'd agree, close off the General FD for a trial period and see how the visitors/log in numbers vary

I thought we were going to debate this and then have a vote? 2. What exactly is the issue?
Almost every site has a flow of visitors; when on WSF and RSA-UK I would check out the viewing stats. For example being the boss of RSA-UK and using the same software as WSF there the admin can see much more than just viewing numbers, you can in fact see and track every ip address live and watch what and where that person is viewing/posting.
The thing is when things get lively on any site the stats go through the roof whereas these days the WSF stats are, in the C+P section a whole lot flatter than in the good old day’s.
As you may know I ran the *Rodbenders.net Facebook Group page that built while being set to open view and the stats showed a regular set of posters/members (you had to register to post) = to 20% or so of the membership a further 15% or so would post less often. A further 15% would view post but never post.
When things got out of hand and folk tried to get me removed from the Cornwall IFCA because of my personal views on the *Rodbenders.net forum I decided to make the page private. All that happened was we attracted no new members, those who had access and that wanted to would/could still copy n paste post also the Facebook interface still let’s some posts appear on peoples home page/time line.
The truth of it is unless you have the facility like that on the vbulitin platform you can’t guarantee that being behind closed doors is any safer than being on an open forum. WSF shut off C+P from public view and made it a members only area just as you are suggesting but trust me I can and do look in on the WSF C+P section even though I’m banned from the site, I can even do it by stealth meaning they would never see my own ip address.
WSF could if they wanted set up an almost water tight page that would then be as safe as the members want but still there will be some trust required. This then takes me back to the question 'number two' above. What are you hoping to find out that is not already obvious?
PLEASE NOTE *Rodbenders.net group page which is closed (The magazine page remains open) should not be confused with the now active Rodbenders open group run by Barry Luxton which I stress is nothing what so ever to do with me.

Now I am not computer literate, but when I go on the site, I read what I want then if I reply, I have to log back on.
But I logged on the day before.
Cant we just stay logged on?
Now everyone will tell me that you can, but I don't know how.
Back in the day, like Hotmail, or E bay, you just clicked ' keep me logged in'
I recon most people just hit the site without thinking to log in
I know I do!!

All to do with how you have set up your browser mate and in particular browsing history. Go to your start button select 'control panel'..... select 'Internet options'..... un-tick 'delete browsing history on exit' then click 'apply'............. Next time you sign in tick the little box under where you type your username

Problem is the wife bought me this fuxxxxx iPad .
Can't get on with it, but you know how it is, don't like to upset her.
Will get my son to read what you put and sort it out.
Remember I don't even know what an app is
Thanks , he will sort it for me, ............................................................ he just read that and apparently you can't do it on an ipiPad
help required!!!
Or I could just log in
