clive it is accessible but with caution scott and i went 2 weeks ago you can either go dwn the chine which is some what mountain goats track or if i was you go through the holiday camp to the chalk path then 3/4 way down it take a left to the stream and walk through to the beach its not to bad that way just go careful or you may end up with wet feet in my opinion through the holiday camp is by far the best option hope this helps oh btw we done chale at the weekend now thats a diffrent story altogether its deffo not for the feint hearted its more for the marine type person that doesnt mind bit ab sailing in 2 parts

There's bad JuJu down there mate.
I will never fish there again.
Was down there back in the day with Chad and Pete and someone walked behind me up to where Chad was, but there was no one there.
All the time we was down there it felt like we were being watched, and trust me we ain't the only ones to do a runner from there.
Screw that beach!!!

Now I have had that vibe down Chale Old Fart but never Atherfield - I wonder if its all
in our imagination sometimes but I do remember one weigh in back in the Day when one of our
members turned up white as a sheet sans his gear - he had left it all on the beach and fled
after something put a hand on his shoulder - he was the only person on that particular beach
that night, one of the lads went back down to Blackgang with him after the weigh in and
helped him gather up his tackle - I dont think he ever fished Blackgang again

Ask him when you see him next. I worked with him for years and I know what he is like, but that spooked us I tell you.
It was either late 76 or early 77, same time they were knocking down the TB hospital at Ventnor and all the goings on there.

I do understand and these things happen, but lets hope it does not put people off from fishing Atherfield..period I wouldn't like to count how many times I have fished there, at night, alone or in company and never got spooked, mind you that doesn't apply to Brightstone Beach, now that can be a bit spooky.. but its not so bad now as I have got a bit deaf, so any ghosts can walk behind me now and I wouldn't hear them, that must pi** them off. Its a shame that people like yourself when spooked, don't turn around and confront the ghost, you could of had a real good chat about things on the other side, now, that would make an interesting forum thread? take it easy m8 lighty

Mate you have hit the nail on the head there.
I wish,I really wish that I had the bottle to go back down there on my own at night and see if it happened again, and if it did stay around and see if I could get an answer to the biggest question of all. Is there something after death.
Alas, I have to be honest and say that I don't.
I have been to many 'haunted' places when younger and fished many 'haunted ' beaches, Brighstone ,Brook, Alum Bay and Compton but never felt or seen a thing.
We were stupid enough to try Ouija once, and don't ever try that Shxt ,because that can seriously be bad JuJu!!
What happens that night, was frightening , or perhaps just weird.
I don't know what it was, or even if we imagined it because of all the talk about Ventnor Hospital.
Such is life's rich tapestry, but I will never fish that beach again at night, even if I was 40 years younger.
Having said that I used to fish a lot in my boat at night alone ( well no bugger likes me) and I know how the old mind plays tricks and how,if you ain't carefully the imagination can run away.
Perhaps it was just that.
But I would be interested if anyone else has been spooked on a beach at night.

I think many people have been spooked on the beach at night, its probably that at night your senses are heightened to compensate for your lack of sight in the dark, us humans don't do well in the dark. Its strange but I have always been more comfortable on a pitch black night than one where you can see partially along the beach, its like if I can't see anything it don't matter?
But one thing is for sure, no one has ever been injured by a ghost on our beaches, can't say that for other humans or dogs you might meet.
Lets face it, when you goes out, more people walk past you than ever down Atherfield, it would have been fantastic if you had turn around and saw what frightened you...... as long as it wasn't a Polar Bear I wouldn't have give a f+++

I've been spooked down Blackgang before, cold sweats, puckered up rusty sheriff's badge, holding your breath while you're trying to catch the sound of the ghosty serial killer heading my way - i'm putting it down to a quiet night and an over active imagination though! Lost count of the times that i've continually heard something behind me only for it to turn out to be a bloody fox though!

Well you can all put it down to imagination and laugh it off,,,but I know that when it happened to me, I got back to the car and then found out that someone,or something had peed in my underpants.
Now explain that then !!

Well this has been entertaining and apparently the steps ARE washed away so tonight we are
going to find out if a 70 + senior citizen and a 60 year old crip can scramble down there

We'll best of luck.
You will be down on that dark beach as the tendrils of fog roll on getting thicker and thicker untill you can't see your hand in front of your face as the water drips off your line.
Then you will hear the noises behind you, getting closer and closer.
Sounds of feet shuffling along the beach towards you.
And then the fog will lift and you will find yourself surrounded by the living dead who want to hack you to pieces and suck out your soul.
A bit like going to an away game at Millwall, back in the 70s really.
Have fun.

Old Fart, "Well you can all put it down to imagination and laugh it off,,,but I know that when it happened to me, I got back to the car and then found out that someone,or something had peed in my underpants. Now explain that then !!" Simple, obviously the Ghost had spent a bit more time behind you than you had realised! lighty
