Sadly, my father, other wise known as the Theoldfart, passed away last month after a brief illness.
As a prentice he worked at Whites Shipyard, down at Cowes.
In those days they used to make 'Snowballs' out of the powered Asbestos, and throw them at each other.
It was the Asbestos that finally got him ,but he lived longer than everyone else who was down there at the same time.
I know he used to take great joy in 'Winding those daft buggers up on that fishing site' and to be honest it kept him going.
I hope you never took him too seriously, although I know some did.
As he told me , ' You can annoy some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but I want to annoy the bloody lot of them'
He was my Dad, and although he may have come across as a miserable old sod, he was a very kind chap who would help anyone out , and always give them the befit of his knowledge, even if it was only to let them know that 'Bloody Nippers know nothing'
He cared deeply about the way the sea was being over fished, and was disgusted with the way governments ignored it.
I wish I could share some of the stories about his life and the things he put his apprentices through ( He left the shipyard and went into the building trade). But I was deeply moved that although they are retired now, six of them contacted me and asked it they could carry the coffin into the Crem.
We covered the coffin in sacks as he wanted to be 'Taken down and burned in a sack, and tell everyone else to go the next day. If they couldn't be bothered to come and see me when I was alive'.
But we had to,ignore that wish as a fair few turned up, so as he wasn't religious , I just told a lot of stories about growing up with my Dad in the 'Old days'
Had them rocking in the seats with the stories, never heard so many people laugh at a funeral.
As we walked out the head woman from the undertakers came up to me and said that it was 'The best Funeral she had ever been to'
When the curtains closed, we played The Stripper music.
As mum ( Mrs OldFart) said, 'It was the only bloody music that he liked'
Sorry I didn't let you all know before, but I had to get my son to get into this site and I have had a lot of things to sort out.
He went down hill really quickly at the end and wanted to go.
Remember ,,,,it will come to us all so make the best of every day you have!
Best Wishes and take care
