I can remember a flyfishing lesson I got once off of an old fella and he showed me a picture of a guys eye after a very small fly whipped his eye and it was awful, it had torn his eye right open. He explained that if you produce a "whip crack" when casting the fly turns over at about 700 mph and god help you if you're eyes in the way. I didn't complain when he produced a pair of safety glasses.
