Was going fishing this morning but for the first time in 14 years the engine wouldnt start, dont think its anything serious but made me think. Perhaps its time to treat myself to a new one . I am looking at a 115hp 4 stroke, has anyone got any experience of the various makes (good or bad)and also any fuel consumption figures, Real not manufacturers claims. Cheers, Hope that those of you who did get out today do ok.
Rich

Hello Rich
We're looking to do the same (probably sometime next year). 115 4 stroke Hondas at the top of our list. I have'nt been able to find a bad report as yet & believe me I've tried.
They are a good few quid more expensive than the others when we've actually got to talking figures with the dealers but Honda's excellent mechanical track record + 5 yrs of comprehensive warranty justify's the money in my opinion.
A point worth mentioning is that the Vtec version is un-rivalled but currently is only available on the 90 horse & the 135hp (? maybe the 150hp? cant remember!) but speaking to the guy in 'Auto-marine' in Southsea he mentioned that Honda are making changes right across the whole range & he suspects that all the bigger horsepower outboards (from 50hp upwards, maybe even smaller?) will all be Vtec.
A point worth noting for two reasons - 1. If anyone is at the point of buying but would prefer to wait for the Vtec equivalent, 2. You can get a fair lump off an engine as they are now because of the planned change which will superseed the existing engine.
Another fact that impressed me that I read (about a year ago now) is that not a single Honda V-tec engine has ever mechanically failed! other than due to owner neglect, e.g didnt maintain engine levels etc. Pretty impressive I thought! the survey was concerning the car engines which obviously refers to hundreds of thousands of Vtec powered cars sold without a single one being returned within the 5 yr warranty period.
Let me know how you get on Rich, Pete

I've had a Honda 115 on the back of my warrior for over 3 years now and has never let me down. I've got a few mates with them on to and no grief. Portguide in Maidstone serviced it last and gave great service, they charged less than my mate paid to get his 115 2 stroke mariner serviced......... and he has had grief with it! Fuel usage averages a litre a mile which is about the same as my old evinrude 50 on a 17ft wilson! Plus if you buy honda you not only get 5 years warranty but an RYA boat handling course free! Provided it's over 50hp.....I think!
