I picked up some good advice on this forum a few months back, the major problem I had was snatching at my cast, It would give me the most distance I was capable of but within a session I would suffer numerous B.N's. I then changed my mainline to one with a bit bigger diameter & the birdsnests are much reduced & I still have a respectable distance. It also helps to have a slow reel for practice/fishing i put rocket fuel liqiud grease in my reels for casting n fishing,I also leave my reels slightly short of a full spool when filling with line, which helps no real drop in distance n plenty of saved line! just cause ya reels fast does not mean super distances.

The pendulum is probably the best for flinging to the horizon, but I've voted 'other'. When I am tying to get a bit of distance I use my own hybrid sort of arialised off the ground cast. It's efficient rather than spectacular. I have four distances: As far as I can. Medium. Short. Very short. Like the others have said, long casting is a great tool to have but in my area distance is not the key most of the time. except when fishing portchester ha ha ha

the average cast either pendy or ground for a normal angler will be much the same with bait on anyway.i still use a levelwind for casting never get birdsnests.

I dont like level winds as they stop you getting a proper grip on the spool when power casting and reduce your overall distance by as much as 15% but if you dont care about distance then its not a issue, you right in saying there is not much difference in distance with pendy or off the ground when fishing but if you are fishing on a shingle or rock beach then rather than take a launching platform ( piece of drain pipe ) then the pendy will get you extra yards cause of the confidence factor of not dragging rocks and debris around when you go for it off the ground.

Can someone add a "Really lame OTG derrivative with guaranteed birds-nest" to the types of casting poll? That's me.

stevieboy if you are not a huge caster then try a levelwind, you do not get any probs and i have found your line lasts a bit longer to.with bait in the wind they are a godsend, looking around i dont see many people getting further,

Hi Siy Have to agree mate......being a freshwater convert.my only casting style is kinda heavy feeder over the shoulder lob but i add in a part pendulum by swinging the lead away from me then toward me 2 or 3 times trying to gain some momentum.then when it is in a sorta straight line away from me (fire in the hole) off it goes. I aint got a clue how far i actually achieve.bout 80 yds would be a better than average one. my attempts at off the ground normally mean sending shingle all around me and my efforts at a proper pendu turn me into a whirling dervish. Needless to say i fish on my own.....50% embarrassment/50% health and safety .....lol Dear Sirs Tuition sought idiot available most times..........lol

Hi All, There are meany factors you have to think of when casting, it doe's not matter what style you use as long as you remember that firstly and most importantly is safty, to yourself and others around you. As to casting style, I find this depends on the following conditions on the day. I always take into account size of bait, wind speed & direction, strenght of tide, this will determine the size of lead and angle of trojectory of the cast. But the main thing to remember is always keep things smooth and well balanced. Distance will always come with practice.
