Ok..having decided to keep the Conoflex Match Estuary rod with the Penn 525 mag as my "new" main beach armour I need some advice on Ideal Reel position. Phil.of whom im buying it from likes to use it Reel low......about 6" from the rod base. However,I chatted with Phil Hyde a south west casting instructor and he recommended the following for reel "up" for reel up, width of shoulders + width across both sets of knuckles + half an inch (or 1 cm) for each ounce of the lead. 22+6+2.5=30.5inches up the butt. You'll need to experiment, that is a good ball-park figure to start. I just wondered what opinions you fellers have on this..... So i can go away and practice me asssss off. cheers Gazza

Sounds very confusing to me, I have reel up, was told long time ago, stick rod Butt in your arm pit, reel should sit with your arm extended and thumb on spool. Works for me!

The reel-down business came about with longer and longer rods on the tournament field. The advantage (low) is a better feel and balance to a long rod (13' +) when casting. The downside is the long lever effect when retrieving. You can use an extender which slots into the butt below the reel, but others manage quite well with it low. I reckon a rod at 13 ft and below is more comfortable for fishing with the reel up. My rods are made with the middle of the fixed fitting 70cm up from the butt cap. This roughly corresponds to the butt cap placed under the armpit and thumb on the centre of the multiplier spool or first and second finger around the stem of the F/S. Some F/S users like it a couple of inches longer than this.

IN a fishing situation I really don't think that there is much of an advantage in 'going low' but as Gremlin says it causes issues with leverage when reeling in. a double shot of doggies and a bit of weed aint fun to reel in with the reel down there Other issues also arise from a low reel position such as , without an extender/reducer in place, your reels are suseptable to sand getting in and damage being done from stones etc. When I first started casting I managed 250 yards with the reel up on a 14ft Century CME. I have since upgraded my Tourny rods and my current one really does need to be cast reel down and as such i have got used to it being down there and therefore I generally fish reel down when i am using my CME or Crest Having cast and knowing the action of the 'Estuary Match' I reckon you'd be far better off reel up tbh. Thats certainly how i would use it! BTW Thats a nice rod you have there

I normally use the reel down posistion but the other night i was having a really bad night messing up all my casts then i thought i would try the reel up posistion and when i cast that way i was casting fine. i think u should try both and use what u feel more comfortable with

My first rod was a one piece bamboo pole, about 6 foot in length complete with very basic, cast aluminium centre pin reel, line and a two hook paternoster all for 24 shillings and 11d(Christmas Prezzy)....why do I remember the exact sum of something purchased 45 years ago when I cant remember what I did this time last week?Puzzling that?I caught my first fish about 6 months later when the thaw had set in,1962 was pretty cold for those of you who can remember,my first fish was a Scorpion Fish, ugly MF but I proudly took it home for mother to cook, she promptly binned it and I probably had a fish finger with the bread crumbs scraped off instead, anyway,Ive digressed but some of these blogs bought back memories,I was happily dangling off the end of Ryde pier that summer when some adult turned up next to me with a beach caster and multiplier of some description, baited up and cast out towards the far horizon....I immediately thought"I can do that"........well my cherished two hook paternoster indeed headed towards the far horizon accompanied by strange cracking noise that I still hear occasionally today,it took me a few seconds to realise that I was no longer attached to my my end rig which was all the tackle I possessed in the world, also there appeared to be a bush growing out of my reel,I think I cried most of the way home(I was only 8)shoulda stuck to dropping down the side of the pier, happy days tho,it cost 2d to get on the pier and you could fish down there all night, anywhere on the pier, where did that all go???

You don't need a reducer for reel down, it just makes actual fishing easier.
In fishing conditions, I use reel up most of the time. The more I use my Syntra and improve my casting style, the more it's asking for reel down but I can get away with it for now.
