Hi all, Just got myself a nice little ABU 5000 and will be having some fun with that and a bass rod this year. Thinking about putting some braid on the reel as I won't be casting too far with it, just for close in stuff, free lined mack/squid etc plus maybe for bouncing around a couple of ounces of lead ever now and again. Anyone have any tips or advice for a newcomer to braid?

use a mono shock leader as braid has no stretch

I've tried loads of brands and I like Powerpro best, its round and tough.
Cos I'm carp at judging how much backing to put on I put on a mono leader of say 20' and wind that onto the reel first, then attach the braid and wind on to the spool. If you are filling a reel with braid of say 25% greater breaking strain than the mono that you would normally use and you have bought a 300 yd spool you will find that when its all on you will be some way below the lip of the spool as the braid is so much thinner that mono. Attach any old mono of similar BS to the braid and wind on until the line is at the correct height on the spool.
Now you got the pain that the line is on the spool backwards so I then run it off the reel onto an old empty line spool fitted to an electric drill and then run that off onto yet another empty spool again using the drill. Now the line is the right way round to wind onto the reel.
Bit long winded but you do not have to guess how much backing to use.
As well as filling the spool up, using mono prevents the line slipping on the spool, braid without backing is prone to do that.

The Powerpro Braid in 30lb BS is O.28mm which is around 8lb in mono line. With/without mono on the spool first or a mono shock leader to top the braid off with. Would 30lb "strength "be adequote to use as a general allround BS .....or do you use different strengths for ............shallow water species/plaice and then medium depth/lure/Pollack Bass mixed ground...........and finally deep water/wrecks/Conger..Ling Uptide Fishing..Rays/Tope And im assuming..... a 150yd spool would be enough as this a massive 450 feet . This link also talks of Shockleaders and Knots for the job. www.fishing.co.uk/article.php3?id=1855Any fav,s for braid to mono. Gazza PS.....Im gonna book meself into the local NUT house having wasted the last half hour trying to tie the POXY Bimini Twist.

You cannot beat a Bimini hitch connection as Russ describes but its a fag to tie

Don't I know it, found that out the hard way Power pro is definately the best that I've used. I always use a mono leader as I find it better for casting and it gives you a bit of stretch with a fish under the rod tip. The mono to braid knot I use is called the Mahin.

Thanx Gazza I've been using 30lb for most of my fishing - clean beaches to the bristol channel, for the rough ground I've gone back to 20lb big game (now reclassed at about 30lb) as the braid don't seem to take knocks from sharp objects as well as the mono. For lure fishing I've used 20lb powerpro with a 5 - 6ft fluro leader For boat fishing- not a clue not done that........ YET.. Hope that helps Steve. I've always used 300m spools, I wont ever cast anywhere near that but I don't think 150m is enough. Some of the really shallow beaches you could end up walking back 50m+ up the beach with the tide.

Thanx Gazza Sorry Gazza did not read your post properly IIDRTFI I normally buy 300 yd spools as braid does not deteriorate with UV or time, just with use, so you can keep cuttin it back if it gets worn chaffed etc. I use 12 LB for Breaming and the like in shallow water & 30 LB for most everything else. I don’t like using Braid for eels, when they are on the surface, it can be a bit of a rodeo and I just like the continuity of no leader. Anyway big eels is something I don’t tend to do much these days as me back aint up to it any more.
