To be honest i have not found any that don't shatter (not that i have gone completely out of my way to find any). I had some of the aluminium oxide ones put on my hurricane a couple of years back and even they shattered in no time!

The rings on my old uncle's boat rod from the '50's never shatter - they are heavy chrome plate on marine brass LOL. Yes, I am now the proud owner of that rod - totally solid fibre glass. Maybe we should go back to that sort of thing (I still use it sometimes but it's a bit short by today's standards.

watch out with the Mustad Viking rod the rings are very fragile got a nice action though Best left by the sound of it!! Its a shame companies dont use the old green fuji's I never had any problems with them..... Yeah i know them old eyes, also remember the see through rings sat in the bulky stainless housing? ;D There must be a market for indestructible rings out there eh? Cheers on the viking info, i think i`ll go for the 2-3oz bze. At least i know it will cast a 45/ 60grm lure, a bigger bubble float and a small lead if need be, also it should be great free-lining whole squid and macky heads!. Should be a good all rounder really more that a lure rod i know, but that's what i want really thinking about it! I can always go for something else if it doesn't do what i want ;D

a pike rod would be ideal for all that

I'd agree with mick, pike/carp rods are the best and as long as they get a swift wash down with fresh water they will last forever

It rather have a genuine bass rod than a carp rod. Borrowed one off Nick last year, very nice. I can see it becoming a bit of an endurance affair casting / recasting a bubble float / spinner with a fully thru actioned rod, too floppy. I'd go with the BZe. If you're going to stand there freelining and holding your rod (oo-er) you want it to be light. Carp rods for carp, bass rods for bass

I`m definitely going to go for the greys bze 2-3oz. Never heard a bad word about them only a lot of praise. I know its not fundamentally a lure / spinner rod, but the fixed spool version will do it all. Bass rod, freeline rod, lure caster ect.......Job done. Cheers for all your recommandations guys!

just poppin my nose in,,, the best rod i have ever used and would never loose is a penn 11'6" bass power stix... i can spin/plug/splutter, with all but the lightest lure with a shimano fixed spool , then i change to a small multi like 5600/5500 and depending on line and weight you can lob a 3 oz lead and bait into surf... even not being a strict spin rod it is my fav rod of all time, its very thin and light and when you first pick it up you would think it was week but i can tell you i have pulled in 1.4 ton of weed with this rod at east cowes some nights.... all in all good bit of kit hope this helps dean
