Take the thermostat out and try,or check the new thermostat. I know it's new but could be faulty.
Otherwise not really sure

Hi Darrell Whilst checking the thermostat, see if you can see any build up of salt corrosion. As it is raw water cooled you may have to run some SaltX around the engine to help clear some of the waterways. Also check the hoses to see if any are collapsing internally. Do you have a raw water filter? Is it blocked or partly blocked? Water intake is this clear? It is worth checking the simple things first. Good luck Dave

Hi thanks alot for your help, I have cleaned out the manifold walls and found some rust and salt build up around one off the inlet pipes so hopfull that should do it now. Dave s it did not have a strainer/filter on the raw water side so I have now fitted one thanks again .

Have you fitted the correct thermostat, as it's raw water cooled it should be about 54 degrees C?
The correct thermostat for a raw water cooled volvo is double acting, when the thermostat opens, the top bit closes the bypass. If the bypass isn't closed off there will be no circulation through the engine and it will overheat. You can't run without a thermostat for the same reason.

Thanks for that Brian I will check that as well. I know volvo like to charge alot for everything on that motor now,I have bought a cheap raw water strainer that says it can take 120LPM but when I bring the rpm up it starts to empty. Iam running a 5/8 sea Cock do you think that should be able to provide enough flow.thanks for your help Darrell.

Darrell I would have thought 5/8 would be ok. Mine is done with 15mm copper. Mine's an AQ110 which is an earlier 1.8 litre version of yours.

Hi again one more thing, do any of you know what temp the aq130 should run at as I am going to fit a new gauge with up to 110degrees on it. The one on my boat now just says normal and now runs around the A or L of the word, thanks again Darrell

As it's raw water cooled it should run at about 54 o C, any hotter and the salt in the water will cause problems. That's why I asked if you had the correct thermostat. Just checked the owners manual for the AQ130, it is 54 o C. The owners manual is HERE it's a large file so will take a while to download.

I had my AQ110 rebored, and the head converted to unleaded at Magnum Engines on the Nuffield Estate at Poole. I've just been back and had a Ford 2litre SHOC (Pinto) head converted to unleaded and the exhaust valves refaced, cost £143.35.
