Hi all I need to do some strengthening with fiberglass but the area is dirty and greasy/oily. What is the best method of cleaning down the area before I start? Thanks Dave

Hi Dave ive just been doing the very same thing and had to degrease everything on my boat, i tried turps (crap) it just spead the oil and made it worse, then neat petrol on a rag (crap) samd result as before then i bought some engine degreaser from ebay for £8 worked perfect. What i done was i took the pipe of my bilge pump stuck a lenth of garden hose on in place had the pump running and used a paint brush let it dry and it looked as good as new. Oh and ive still got almost a gallon of resin and activator left over and a fair bit of tissue+ mixing buckets thats going to be of no use to me now ive finnished. P.S if you need any tips just ask i was lucky i had an ex MOD laminator showing me the right way . Tony

Thanks guys I have been reading about adding acitone to diesel as it improves performance, fuel consumption and cleans the injectors/pump. You don't need much, How Much to Use Add in tiny amounts from about one part per 5000 to one part per 3000, depending on the vehicle -- just a few ounces per ten gallons of gas. This comes to between 0.0003 % to 0.0025 % acetone maximum or approximately 1/15th of one-percent. Note that is around .78 cc per liter or one ounce per 10 gallons. Not more than three oz. per 10 gallons. Have a look here: pesn.com/2005/03/17/6900069_Acetone/All the info you need! And the side effects. Dave

Hi all, scotty sorry if i stand on your toes but i was told never ever let acetone anywhere near resin as it will soften it also when i went and bought the gear to fiberglass my boat i asked about keying the old glass up and the guy said that the resin has got something in it that makes the new resin stick to the old. Just a comment guys not a pop Tony

dunno who told you that about acetone mate maybe they meant not to get it on your resin while its going off. having done quite abit of laminating myself i can safely say acetone is the right stuff to use. even if the bloke is right about not needed to key up the area it doesn't do any harm to play it safe and key it up anyway

Acetone is fine to clean up the area and i would always key up with about a 36 grit flexy disc on a 4 or 4 1/2 inch grinder. The resin will stick without a key but nowhere near as good as a roughened up surface.
