Hi i'm thinking of investing in a chartplotter.
At the mo i have a fishfinder and a gps, now my question is exactly how will the chartplotter differ from my gps.
Excuse my ignorance, it is obviously a world apart but i was wondering how it would benefit me more than the gps. Surely it just gets you to the same place.
I know its probably a silly question to some people.

mike,a chart plotter has to have a map cartridge c-map,navionics etc for it to work properly, which you will have to buy separately to get the best out of the plotter. the map cartridge will show you a detailed area of the sea bed,(like the paper charts)most plotters can also run radar, sounder and a whole host of other things if you want them to. get one and you wont regret it

Hi Mike If you want to have a go with a chart plotter before buying try this site www.lowrance.com/en/Downloads/Product-Emulators/Choose a chartplotter and download the emulator, you may need to download the maps etc but if you read the instructions it will make sence. Regards Dave

Mike, they have all the known wrecks marked on them...bloomin marvellous
I have a Garmin one, only because I plan to install a garmin radar - which is unique in doing the radar data processing in the head unit. This enables you to export radar data to the chartplotter using CAT5e (telephone wire size) cables. Most other systems send raw radar data down monster cables to the processor in the cabin.
I also have a Humminbird fishfinder with coastal outline and the ability to set waypoints/record marks. It doesn't give any seabed details such as banks, gullies or wrecks. I was never totally impressed with Humminbird as a product.
On the contrary I love the garmin Chartplotter to bits..totally awesome fishing tool.
