I've just bought my first boat (dejon 14) and it has a Mecury 25hp engine. When I picked the boat up, the engine was put in a dustbin of water, and although it hadn't been started for 3 months, it fired up and ran fine (on the third pull). The boat was towed 100 miles home, and I'm well chuffed I own a boat. Tried to start it for the first time after 3 weeks on the drive (dustbin of water again) and not a murmer. I've following the guys starting instructions to the letter.... "No battery required, just open valve on top of tank, squeeze primer 4-5 times (hand bulb on fuel line) open choke if very cold, ensure cut off switch behind throttle near steering wheel is in the "on" position and pull starter cord. Make sure you never start the engine "dry" a engine will over heat in seconds, hence my bin of water". I've got spark, fuel and compression, but nothing. Anyone out there got any ideas? As I'm baffled and don't really know where to go from here.

sounds like somthink sticking in the carb, if it been sat around for a while thay get sticky and can start one day and not the next , just strip the the carb down and clean it out with white spirt and a good blow though. just make sure you set it back up as you found it. if that fails and you have a good strong spark , then compression test must be next step

If its a 2/ pull the choke out and push it back in 3 times before starting, the choke on these engines is also a manual enrichner scotty.

make sure you squeeze primer till it goes hard - solid, float in carb will shut of when full of fuel. , also check to see if have strong spark or spark plug breakdown or leeds and or stator along with other suggestions.

A good way to clean oily plugs is to spray them with East Start.
Work well if you have winterised your motor with fogging oil.
Not sure where your located but if you have your carb stripped down I would be more than happy to drop it in our Ultrasonic cleaning tank.
I am in Fareham

Wow, thank you very much for that offer, and I may well take you up on that.
Thanks to everyone that has responded to my post. I won't get a chance to try and start the engine again until next week now, but will let you know how I get on.
Thanks again everyone.

Well, engine is running fine now, and ticking over lovely. What was the problem? Just needed fresh petrol! Now I can think about my first trip out, thanks for all the replies.
