The wife has given the all clear for me to chip in with my dad and buy a fishing boat. Can anyone give any advice on types of boat i should be looking for and those i should be avoiding! Looking for a boat that will allow beteween 2 to 4 people fish and will be happy up and down the Hamble, able to fish out in the Solent with the odd trip over to the Isle of Wight. The wife may occasionally step on board and my 4 year old boy can't wait! Any advice wil be appreciated, so far have looked at a Sea Hogg Sea Jeep and have an Orkney Fastliner to look at. Looking at a budget of about £4500 but the cheaper the happier the wife will be. Throw whatever you feel will be useful at me........... ;D Happy days.

I have a secondhand seahog seajeep with a 50hp Honda which I launch from the Hamble and use to fish the Solent. It is fairly easy to launch and recover on my own, just depends on the wind and tide. I get over 30mph out of it fully loaded on a fairly calm sea, but then again I only go out when its force 3 or less. I have only ever fished with 2 of us in it and dont think it would be any good for more than 2 people fishing. If you wanted a boat for 4 people I think I would reccomend a warrior, predator, samurai or raider type boat. However you are probably going to have to pay a few grand more At anchor if the sea starts to chop up a bit the boat does slam on the waves, it doesn't bother me but I think it would annoy some people, a commonproblem with cathedral hull boats. Its handling in rough sea is good however you do have to throttle back because it does have a tendancy to want to take off if you are going too fast ;D All in all its a good little boat which I find great for inshore fishing within the solent. A 50hp 4stroke engine is highly reccomended. I can hoestly say that I have never felt unsafe in it ;D ;D I think the most important thing to make sure of when buying a second hand package is the engine must have full service history backed up with sales receipts etc. My engine still had 4years manufacturers warranty left on it and had been run for less than 20hours, so it was as good as new. The first boat I bought had a duff engine so once bitten twice shy as they say Boats and outboards have one advertised at £7995 brand new with 50hp honda and trailer. If you can stretch to that ammount it is a bargain. I hope you have found what I have written of use and wish you luck in fiding what you want. If you would like to look at my boat at any time you are welcome to see it on my drive, pm me if you do and I will let you know my address.

I have a wilson 17'. I like em, ok the mans right when he says that it slams a bit in rough. If the weather gets bad however I can put up with a bit of slamming as I know wilsons are great sea boats that can handle slamming and she'll get me home.... (I hope).... Mine Has a Yamaha 40hp four stroke which is enough power to easily plane and get you out of the s**t if need be. 60 hp would be nice but for a 17' boat 40 is ok,i'm sure you wouldn't be going offshore too far in a boat of that size anyway. Another reason I like my wilson is you can stand on any corner of the boat and they don't 'list' (if that's the word) much. I deffo wouldn't take any more than 3 of us out on a boat of 17' with all the fishing gear too, that's my opinion anyway.

Have you looked Here? It's a buyers market at the moment, so don't take too much notice of the asking price, some are desperate to sell.

I used to have a Strikleiner and now have a Warrior 165. Neither are suitable for 4 people fishing-but ok for 4 up if you just want to potter around the estuary-across to the Island etc in calmer weather on a pleasure trip. I sometimes fish with 3 of us in the Warrior and it gets a bit "cosy" to say the least. You do find yourself getting in each others way a lot.

Well we have gone and done it!! Many thanks to everyone for the heaps of advice. I guess it comes down to personal choice at the end of the day and as it goes we managed to go and view an orkney and a dorey side by side. The dorey was not for sale but it did allow us to compare boats and we are now the proud owners of a 16ft Orkney Fastliner!! Had the option of looking at a 19ft orkney to but on viewing we decided that 16ft is big enough for us! Will try to attach a photo!! Cheers again to everyone for the advice! Happy days!!
