got this reel about 6 weeks ago, i have really enjoyed my fishing with it and caught a few pb's withit aswell, good piece of equipment, my first multiplier and is quite easy to get the hang of and learn with, HOWEVER!! the big but is i have had to replace the gear shaft on it twice as the thread keeps breaking and it has broken again causing the handle to become wobbly and eventually fall off, just wondered if anyone else has had similar problems with a similar reel?

Thats the problem with abu reels. They`re definately not buit for winching. I only use them in the field for casting. Try pumping fish or weed in instead of cranking it in. The quality of them has definately deteriorated since they started making them in taiwan, they say that they are only assembled there and that the parts are still swedish but I have my doubts

i see, yer the pattern seems to be whenever i get a decent size fish hooked and theres a bit of a battle to get it in then this smahses up the shaft, cheers for the tip on pumping when reeling.

Its a shame that a company like Abu who had a good name now produce some awful rubbish. The BG reels are a prime example. The BG is supposed to stand for big game, they should be taken to the trades description for that! I saw one straight out the box literally fall to bits in two hours of fishing. It could'nt cope with the strain of reeling in a 5oz weight, and im not joking here. The ratchet button pinged off first, then the gearing failed. Id rather buy a second hand original then any of the new far eastern assembled tat.

not sure ive taken it to the shop i bought it from to have it fixed each time so maybe that was the problem, i did mention to the bloke i thought the nut had come loose but he dismissed that it could have been him not putting it on correctly and blamed it on the fact im left handed and probably reel it in funny? anyway its been out about 6 times since it last went so hopefully its on correctly now

Nothing to be scared of mate! After a couple of sessions you will wonder why you ever bought one with a level wind! I know I did when I changed over!
