Nice reel for casting, but the star drag is cack (it's either fully on or fully off with minimal in between play) and when flicking the free spool lever back to engage it, you need to turn the handle a quarter turn too to re-engage it otherwise line just annoys off the spool still.
I heard something like a few thousand were assembled with the wrong bits, seems like I might have ended up with one :thumb:

I've been using the same reel for a few months now, star drag as you say is poor mate :thumb: , i dont have the other prob you mention though, but i'm well pleased with the reel overall, it casts really well. Not sure though how they arrived at that price tag, i've got the s/m/e,

imo if you go past the xtra then your just paying for the bling i dont see the point in putting better faster bearings in to improve cast then slow it all down again with more mags or in the case of the super mag xtra huge mags in to slow it down again just stick with the first mags and you cant go wrong.just my opinion :blah:

That's another thing I forgot, two of the mags just fell out and stuck to the other two, which meant it had zero brakes for a while until I worked it out. Had to araldite them back in

Think he might be talking about the normal 525 Mag Maxwell (black handle), my GS Mag had a silver chrome handle and my Supermag has a gold metallic handle.

Really like my supermags, now I know what to do I enjoy lubing em after a day out...do it after each time just for peace of mind. Dont have any issues whilst casting with em ...now I can control the spool...just set em on "0" and let em fly....well providing theres no head wind. Super strong gearing that allows me to crank in ball after ball of solent weed with nice easy touch handle without complaining. £50 squid each 2nd hand....best fishing buy ive made...IMHO... after all Penn Reels are very reliable....well....mine are..
