i always thought burly/berley is aussie for what we would call 'chum',chopped up fish 'n' guts as groundbait, there was somebody in the uk who make's a 'bait dropper' thingy, you fill with ground bait and lower over the side of the boat on a rope, drop it to the bottom which knocks a trigger to open bait dropper releaseing the groundbait, can do the same just as easy with plastic carrier bag/stone. is this the kind of thing your after www.bait-dropper.co.uk/images/bfm.jpg :drink:

take a boat lead (size i guess depends on tide/how fast you want the groundbait down)tie on a long length of thin rope, place the lead in the bottom of a plastic bag, twist the bottom of the bag so it's tightly around the lead with no air trapped then tie it or tape with gaffa, you should now have a plastic bag with a lead tight in the bottom and the rope coming out of the top of said bag. fill the bag with ground bait and gently lower it by the handles(carrier bag!)until the water is almost at the top, then drop it,the water pressure should keep the bag closed all the way down, when it hit's the bottom pull on the rope in an upwards motion,a good yank or three should then see the lead and tied bottom of the bag come up effectively turning the carrier bag inside out releaseing the ground bait, takes a bit of practice and a few carriers as spare's as they will eventually rip but it work's and it's cheap. a good tactic for fishing down tide of a pier as well, little bits of chopped mackerel and squid for bream etc.

Used those bait bombs a lot in New Zealand: basically minced up fish bits, mostly bonito leftovers (small tuna-like fish) then frozen in 1kg, 3kg lots. Slip them frozen into your berley pot and they slowly melt letting out a nice stream of goo.
I would doubt very much they would sell them in UK: cost of trabnsport bascially left over fish mince not worthwhile. You could try to make your own.....

As an alternative to the bomb or tesco special try one of these they were originally known as the Thamsley Bait Dropper I have been using em off of punts in strong weir pools for years and the feed is always delivered hard on the deck. We have recently adapted em for use to get bream groundbait to the deck in 100feet of water and with a 1lb lead affixed to the wire it has proved very successful....although last time out the pout got there first.... you can get em off fleabay from some of the tackle suppliers.
