How do you all present your crab baits  . I tend to just cut them in half and pick the backshell off only then lash the busted up crabs legs and claws on the hook (single) with a bit of laccy. I catch fish like this but drop a lot of bites :bash: Would a softer more dressed bait be better? Im using 20lb (3ft) maxima and a single 6/0 Mustad viking on a 1oz running leger .

Doesnt have to be pretty. If its smutts you want, maybe scale down to a 4/0 hook.

If you got plenty of crab, I would use a 6/0 pennel and bang 3 on ;D I wouldn't go with 20lb for your pennel I would step up to 30lb.. Although with crab prices at the mo I would use a single size 16 and get 40 baits out of one crab lots of crab in my freezer this year mate I use big baits in a sausage shape so an extra hook makes sense. Ill try your suggestion next time out, the weekend looks good. Thnx

But When i use peeler the Bass just seem to be nipping at the crab am i right in thinking this Alot of places i fish the tide run can have some bearing on the way a bass takes, have u noticed this?and also a large lone fish can (and has :win: ) given a small knock, these bites i tend to hit really hard and until u connect with one could easily put it down to a small fish.........but generally when the bass are just grabbing it and letting go it usually means a few fish are present and they just snatch it before another one does...try holding the rod and as soon as u feel a touch drop the rod tip to give a bit of slack which may allow the bass to really gob the bait ;D this has worked for me.

I fish where the tidal run is very fast but im casting into a ditch/drop off which is slow but the shape of the ditch creates a big eddy

bit baffling, not taking the mick but some of the bites cud be line bites it does happen ......
but try short paternoster with a gripper so it works like a bolt rig ,maybe i would just hold the rod and use something with a really soft tip and keep tryin diffrent length rigs till i found 1 that gave a few hookups ;D the bass that u have caught at this mark,n are they hooked mainly in the lip or inside the mouth? but fishing close in with a decent tide run the bass should be quite positive taking the bait. also try a smaller bait it may just help  with out actually fishin the mark cant think of anything else :bash:

But When i use peeler the Bass just seem to be nipping at the crab am i right in thinking this I dont use maccy much but fished your mark a lot with squid on a short paternoster and pennel .Had a few fish too ( no doubles though :dunce: ) and the fish used to give an almighty pull down of the rod , either hooking themselves or leaving me deflated. :bash: Occasionly i would notice a couple of taps on the rodtip just before the big pull. Most of the fish i caught there where hooked inside the mouth. Where i fish this time of the year I only use crab ,its very shallow (hw-2>hw+1) and has amixed bottom of mud ,stones and shingle with a fair amount of wrack. The fish nose around in the wrack close in and bites are usually very gentle. I was surprised to feel the weight of a good fish when I first struck one of these bites, it was a bit of a revelation for me at the time. I dont think i would have struck quick enough if i hadnt been holding the rod. Most of these fish were hooked in the lip or scissors.

This is the 1st time i have tried here this early in the year and also to using crab. I usually use whole macky fillets in the summer months, in which the Bass are deep hooked! Im quite sure they were bites when most of the crabs smashed to bits when brought in Im thinking that alot of the bites were from smaller Bass competing for food I think i should fish 1 rod instead of 2 and hold the rod :catch: Thanks for all the info Drew its got to help me try to get another Bass over 10lb

Me and a friend had this problem one night down cowes. We were fishing for bass tight in and getting loads of small sharpe bites. We knew they were bass but thought they were small, untill i decided to hit one of them.Rod bent double and a good fish was on.This continude through out the night. Some nights they are just finiky,as they would normally whack the bait.
