Okey dokey guys here we go, I am looking at getting a 3/4m inflatable cos I can't afford a proper boat. I have been looking at the mariner 400 and excalibur 5 with and electric outboard. The boat would be used in the solent and I would get jackets for me and the lad and I have looked at an handheld radio too. What is the opinion on using inflatables for fishing? Should I put some kind of matting over the tubes? Do I need to get an anchor? Can I tie to abuoy etc etc. Sorry its a bit of a vague quetsion please feel free to ask me if it would enable you to give me the best answer. The last thing I want is to get out there and sap the funds that we raise for the rnli. Cheers Peter

Inflatables are fine but I would not go on the Solent with an electric outboard, you will need something with more power as the tides can be very strong. You are not allowed to tie up to navigation buoys so you will have to anchor. Plenty of people fish from inflatables, ythe main downside it they are wet because the sides are so low. On the plus side you can creep in very close to shallow water where bass lurk and other boats can't reach. You will need to budget for a VHF hand-held, your VHF operators course and test, flares, lifejackets, local charts and at least a compass in case you get caught in fog. Ideally a hand held gps as well.

As Salar, says forget electric motors and go for 8 to 10hp 2-stroke or 4-stroke. Anything less than this could be risky in a following sea.
