I have always used fixed spool reels but i felt like a new challenge so the other day i bought a multiplier reel and a rod to suit it. Its an abu 6501 c3 and I got an abu esprit beach rod. I have mastered the basic casting but cannot seem to get a decent distance, birds nests aren't a big problem, is there any good techniques to use to start getting the distance. Any adivse would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dawks, My mate used to laugh at my casting efforts which I got fed up with and finally started to practice the OTG (off the ground) technique. See here neilmackellow.sea-angler.org/. I more or less got it right after a couple of hours then read an article by John Holden where he said that beginners should not try the pendulum technique straight off. He says the way to go is to start with OTG then move on to "airialised" OTG before trying pendulum. Well, having learned "airialised" which gets me out well over 100 yds when I want, I can't be bothered with pendulum so that's what I recommend to folks these days. There are a few little tips which are not always obvious so if you would like to nip over to Hayling sometime, I will give you the benefit of what I have learned.

If your not into clipping down your baits, try to use a rig where your bait is ABOVE your lead, this will fly thrugh the air better that spinning arond like a ledger will. Most use a ledger for close in fishing.

yer i am a lefty bk haha, cheers for the advised eccles i might get down a field this afternoon and give it a crack nothing wrong with being a lefty,im one as well ;D as solehunter has said use a clipdown rig to gain a bit of distance, practice is the only way to improve, make sure you use a shockleader as well. your gear is fine and capable of decent distance for fishing so just a bit of tweaking and all will be good. the aerialised off the ground is a great fishing cast for distance, without being hard to perform like a pendulum, good luck ;D
