Can anyone recommend a decent boat rod, around the 30lb range? Iv had a few very poor examples including Penn Fire & Powerstix & an Abu Conolon, all of which suffered from very bad ring construction. The latter two were not that cheap either. Looking for something more robust that is likely to last longer than one season. Any pointers would be most helpful cheers.

I use two imax rods, they are not well known but are just superb for power and feel. Pricey at upto £90 but worth it, i thought so - so i bought another. I'm not into the well known names but there made with fuji bnh's or something really good eyes apparently Summerlands sell them for £72 i won't recommend anything unless i think it's superb. Anyway they are rated in the weight they can use so the med range is 18 stroke 22 this means about 22lb class rod.I have one of these then there's the 26 stroke 32 which is my latest purchase about a 32lb class rod. This bullied up a 50-60lb conger. To look at them they're pretty slim but they really do pack some power not like the kenzaki's (in my opinion) Summerlands have them for £72 with free postage. So my advice is the 26 stoke 32 if you fish deep in the strong currents but if your happy fishing a lb of lead then the 18 stroke 22 check out this link. www.summerlands.co.uk/jshop/section.php?xSec=3923&xPage=1&xSort=code

Don't know whether they still make them but my Shakespeare Ugly Sapphire has done well for the last five years.

Abu Suveran take some beating and another decent rod that is very reasonably priced is the Daiwa Kensaki range.

Conoflex. I had several over the years I expect most of them will be still going when I've shuffled off. They are not particularly flashy but they are lovely to fish with and incredibly durable.

It depends what you need it for there are as many variations in the stiffness of 30lb class boat rods as there are different types of rod. As a general rule I dont use anything heavier than a 20lb class rod for the vast majority of my fishing. I use a Leeda pirranah 20lb class rod for nearly everything from shadding, gilling, hopping, bait fishing for ling, topeing and light pirking. The only exceptions are, I use a zebco rhino 30lb class for congering sharking and skate fishing and a 6 foot fox carp rod for bassing. I dont see the point in spending megga bucks on boat rods as there are so many very good rods for little money (there are some shockers out there as well mind). I own pleanty of expensive rods but always find myself going back to the cheaper ones. As a rule the mid range rods use the same rings as the pricey ones and as these are the bits that fall apart, why pay more for the same durability?

Look at the Rovex range. I've a 30lb Rovex Magnite Pro that is a superb rod, best rod I've used by far.

Daiwa TDXB 20-30 expensive but very good. Failing that the imax 18 stroke 22 is good.
