Id stay in the harbours even if its a flat calm day. Plenty of Mackerel shoals come right in the harbour this time of year & are nice & easy fishing for the kids on single lures. Plenty of Bass about too but you have to remember it's a protected area for them from 1 May to 31 Oct so any caught have to go back. Lots of species to look for including Mullet, Bream, Smoothies & the advantage of a small boat is you can get to lots of nice spots the bigger craft can't. First & foremost in my mind would be safety so do plenty of planning ahead, check the tides & weather forecast, lifejackets are a must, & don't be afraid to ask for advice.

if langstones a option then there is a wreck post u can tie up to and u cn get alsorts there inclueding trigger fish (at low tide during august september time) there are also some "paint rafts" in plain sight from the mulberry and if u tie up to i think it is the first one u can get mackerel and bass of it but as "wayner" said it is a bass nursery and stick to the harbours till u know exactly how the boats going to handal and what its limits are hope this helps

You need to pay harbour dues to use Langstone and Chichester harbours, also the harbour master may not like you tying up to posts, rafts or buoys. However there are plenty of fish in the harbours, and watch out for strong tides in the entrance (4hp won't stop you being swept out). More local info on www.boat-angling.co.uk and you can look at charts on-line at www.qhmportsmouth.com/port-charts/

Hi Mate, Fingers and I mess about in Langstone in the summer in our dinghy. If you are less than 4 metres I don't think you need to pay harbour dues but check on their website. Unfortunately we are just over the 4 metres so we do have to pay - not too bad though - £35 for the whole year. It does pay to get a chart in my view so that you know roughly what the local features are:- Fish do tend to hang around in certain spots such as wrecks, where two channels meet and deeper holes. Don't forget that taking bass from a boat (and keeping them) is illegal in the harbours and the sea fisheries officers are pretty active this year from what I have seen. They will just cruise up to you in their RIB when you least expect it and you don't want to pay a hefty fine do you?
