I recon you ould be safe enough mate cos its just gonna land on the beach about 3 foot behind you! 20lb line then your in trouble! Im not saying use 10lb line for hook lengths for your style of fishing Drew, but just that there is no need to start putting biting traces on when spinning for bass. time and a place for everything rob, i know diddly squat about boat bassing , methods ,traces etc but the tackle ,rigs you mention is echoed by people that know far more about it than me...........as you said its a completly different kinda fishing to what i do , with different aspects of presentation 3 to 5 oz leads - cast any reasonable distance on 12lb line =................

I'd certainly not try 3-5oz weights on 12lb line!............ at least not for more than a lazy lob......
The largest weight I used for spinning was 40g, which is just over 1oz. Even with this sort of weight, I'd not thrash the cast, just let the rod do the work. For a full blooded 5oz weight, I use a good 60lb shock leader and a nice hefty Beach Caster.
The use of heavier short hook lengths is not a matter for argument. You do, or you do not. I happen to do............ and I shall continue.

for all my plug work i use 20lb braid with a 3-4ft length of 20lb flourocarbon leader tied using a uni- to- uni knot. if using braid with no rubbing leader one small nick from the sharp gills or fins of a bass when he turns for cover shortly after grabbing you lure and the braid will part, shortly followed by a mass of swear words.
