Nope, me neither. I hear it's like most poor tasting fish, the flesh is not very tasty unless you obliterate it with shed loads of strong flavours like chillies and garlic. At which point you may as well use chicken.

Bloke i run into every now and then eats them, some people smoke them, Never caught one myself but i here they are a supreme fighting fish and most people i know who target them for that reason, always return them.

Seems to me like its about 75% of people who almost throw up at the thought of eating them and the other 25% really rate them. I have never tried but wouldn't mind a go on one that has been away from a river and mud for some time (plenty to be had in the sea far from rivers if you know where to look) Same goes for flounder, many people like to eat them and they dont just reside in rivers and can be found in good numbers at marks far from any estuaries. I had one caught in the sea and was cooked on a beach fire, bloody nice it was too honestly!

Same here Dave, ate some right minging flatties from Bembridge harbour once but caught a pretty fat one from the open sea in April and it was like eating a different fish.

doesn't taste like shite... not bad actually. if you catch it in some grubby marina or harbour then yeah, put it back..... as well as in a muddy estury type area! wouldnt eat anything from either. caught over clean sandy ground they are ok. clean, tasty flesh. i have eaten them, it tasted fine to me and i didnt die or get the runs so evreyone's a winner right?!! give it a go! same goes with flounders.

taste bloody loverly if caught out at sea over clean ground like around the channle islands. but from a river or marina you will only ever try 1 then never again. also now with me working on boats i see the antifoul thay suck on and the shite thay eat....lol

cooked it once but i don't eat fish lol.make sure you have all the black lining out of its stomach and poach it in butter and milk the peeps that had it said it was nice :crazy: still never mind the French eat frogs and snails so perhaps mullet ain't that bad

I know it sounds daft but I have enough guilt pangs when I knock a bass on the head, and they always taste OK. I think , based on the replies, that I couldn't bring myself to kill one if there's even a chance it's going to not taste good. Maybe one day from the open seas but not close to a marina. As my favourite spots on the Island are Gurnard and Bembridge then I guess the proximity of marinas to both means they are off the menu. Thanks for all them replies, much appreciated.

When Ive caught them by accident fishing over clean ground they get the usual crack on the head,filleted,flour,salt and pepper and fried in butter the same way I cook most of my fish - um yummy

Now I'm bias because I'm a Mullet Angler and prize them above all other fish for their fight.... but putting that aside I would ask you all to go and look at the boats in your local marina and one thing you will notice is that they all have the charateristic twin scoops of Mullet lips removing the fresh weed and scum off the bottoms of boats...... COVERED IN ANTIFOUL... which means that they are eating small amounts of antifoul with every mouthful
As all toxicologists know those poisons that the tins of antifoul warn you about are cumulative in the body of creatures exposed to thecontents by ingestion.
In short your average Mullet is probably quite toxic with those poisons stored in various parts of its body !!!!
I am currently writing to DEFRA to get their opinion on this issue.
You should also remember that they move around and some of our older Mullet stock would easily have been around in the days when we used arsenic in antifoul. Large commercial ships are still permitted to use more toxic antifoul than pleasure craft :sick:
Would you let your kids eat Mullet ? Would you eat Mullet knowing that risk ?
