Use the Daiwa BG90, this is one of the best wrekking fixed spools. Snowy the UK sold the Daiwa Black & Gold (BG90). The same reel was marketed in the US and other European Countries as the GS9. Sprayed all gold, but mechanically virtually the same. You can still get the GS9 mail order form the canary islands. They use them for reef fishing for paleagic and large reef species. I have used the Diawa GS9 which I bought in the Canary Islands - on hols, to catch big rays there. The drag easily matched the 60Lb nylon which gave way before the reel was anywhere near stressed. I managed to land an 80Lb Ray with ease, but other bigger ones broke the line off in trying to stop runs under boats. I have used it for uptiding back home ...loaded with 30Lb braid and caught Blondes to 25 and Conger to 30+ on it. It is a tough durable reel..... happily recommend it. I have also been out and bought myself two of the new generation Shimano saltwater Baitrunner 12000D. They are superb build and looks. The baitrunner drag is great for uptiding, as you can imagine ...the advantage of pre-setting your fighting drag allows you to have no worry of the rod being pulled over the side and instantly you turn the handle you are into the more resistant fighting drag. I liked the 12000Ds so much I rushed out and bought two of the baby sized 4000Ds for Smooth Hounding. Photos of both reels on my review www.beachandboat.co.uk/index.cgi?board=reviews&action=display&thread=13817If you want me to post a better picture of the Daiwa Reel; but here it is matched to an 80Lb class boat rod doing the business www.beachandboat.co.uk/index.cgi?board=catch&action=display&thread=11878

What about the Penn 760 slammer as these are supposed to be able to handle big fish in the states so would have thought that it should be able to handle nearly all fish in uk water aside from porbies, common skate. I notice they don't have a reverse switch on them, probably so that it can't smash up on a big fish. Anyone used them and if so are they as good as they are made out to be.

I have one which I use for boat fishing. Only used it for Bream Plaice and Bass, but the reel has more light line records than you can shake a stick at. Nice reel to use, but I'm not sure about using if for gilling or shads
