Afternoon, Have used Whiplash 20lb and 30lb for years, so have no real knowledge of any other brands. Have never had problems with the W/L until someone said it always breaks and guess what, the latest spool i bought keeps breaking after only 6 months of use.
I'd like to but a bulk spool of nothing more than 30lb as that would be enough for my eastern solent fishing.
Thanx in advacne Arron

Steer clear of anything called Dacron Fluoro, completely useless.

I think you were just unlucky shonzy as if youve used a product for as long as you say and are happy.....why change..!!!!! maybe just a dodgy spool mate.... I rate the Powerpro which I use in the ridiculously bright yellow.....luv it..!!!....on boats and for shore casting over sand at night. if you wanna try it here is me mates link...... www.fishingtackle-online.co.uk/index.phptell him your a B&B member and get a small discount and that Gazza from Heathrow sent you......errr....on 2nd thoughts he,ll probably charge you more.... ...ask for Ian 07801393501 all that said, there are members on here that hate the stuff.....so each to their own an all that..!!!!!! I went on to the whiplash this year and bought the 20lb and the 55lb. The 55lb was great for 6 months and now it's breaking! 20lb still going strong but I will never buy it again.. Ron Thompson braid was the best I have ever used, a little thicker than most but 100% strong unfortunately no longer made! I had a spool of power pro and had nothing but trouble from it... I'm also stuck to know what to buy next... :bash:

i have used power pro for five years for barbel fishing and carp fishing i consider it to be the best braid i have ever used ,The whiplash original was ok but went furry after a few months the pro whiplash lasted a couple of sessions before it was taken off ...daiwa tournament is ok but if going for a big chuck on a fixed spool then wet it first ....avoid wind knots ....isnt it strange how some can be so pleased with a product and others not i know scores of anglers who rate power pro and have never heard anyone dis it before ...i use it in 5olb for general boat fishing .26lb for carp and barbel fishing ...

I have my reservations about Dyneema UV stability. That is why I prefer the American style braids. They are UV stabilised.

Shoot me down in flames if you like but I like the Berkley Fireline Crystal braid. 45lb on my wrecking rod and 22lb for spinning, etc....

Why is it that when you find something that works and you trust that they stop making it :bash: All of my boat reels are filled with the ron thompson braid ....must be getting on for 3-4 years use on some. Going to reverse it for another 3 - 4! Never let me down, even when breaking out of a snag nine times out of 10 the leader will bust or the hooks will straighten. Should have bought up a few spools while they were still on the shelf

I changed to power pro about 2 years ago and have tried the green, red and yellow with mixed results (mostly good)....recently the yellow started snapping with little pressure after about 18 months :ahhh: :ahhh: so that went in the bin. Red and green going strong and cant fault it ....

Power Pro is a lot thicker than Berkeley Whiplash...so if you think about it like that you could go with 50Lb Whiplash at the same diameter as 30Lb Power Pro 50Lb Whiplash isn't going to break unless you tie it to the stern-post and drive the boat forward !!!!!! I've used Whiplash for years now on all my boat kit...its the dogs for holding the bottom with half the lead of the other stuff used by guys on my boat. Diamter equals drag which means more lead !!!!!! I used to get breaks, but it was my knots... now I've been shown a proper braid knot (thanks Steve) its a bloomin nuisance trying to get the damn stuff to break out when the gear is snagged

I've tried most and in the last 2 years have settled on Power Pro, like Gazza mainly yellow. I find the visibility useful when gilling elbow to elbow with others on the boat. I like the way it handles compared to Whiplash and offset the thickness compared to Whiplash by using a lower BS which is OK because I have found it to be more durable than most other braids...................and you don't have a drama breaking it out, although using a mono leader of the same BS, I normally find the mono breaks first at the weight end knot.
I use 30lb for down-tide work when fishing out of Langstone for all but Blonds & Conger when I use 40LB, which even with huge tides in deep water normally only needs 1.5 lbs of lead to hold bottom.
I still don't like braid for up-tide work though. I find that if there is a bit of a sea running, the lack of give with braid can mean the lead pulls out more easily.
