I have been using this one for over 50 years and it works!
Instead of feathers. Instead of sand eels. Instead of shads, I use elastic bands! (Well I use them as well)
All those years ago, my friend and I used to catch a big basket of mackerel, each day, to sell to day trippers. The problem we found with feathers was that they seem to lose their attraction after several drops. We used ot have to take several rigs each and cycle them, allowing them to dry, which is a bit of a pain.
So we got to discussing the problem and came up with the solution, which is the Lazzy Band. We tried it and bingo!
I've been using them ever since. They work, baited and unbaited, on mackerel, cod, whiting, ling, bass, pollack, coalies......... just about everything...........
For some reason, the only colour, which works consistently, is natural elastic.
I use 5mm elastic bands these days. Turn the elastic band inside out and whip it to the shank of your hook. I normally use 2/0, or 3/0, but I have caught some biggies on 6/0-8/0. Tiny red bands on No.8's work well for joeys and gar.
When whipping, I pierce the band and thread my snood through the hole and the eye of the hook. Form a loop and feed it back through the eye of the shank, before whipping the line around shank and band. After a half dozen-dozen turns, feed the running end through the remianing snood loop and tighten.
The line is best lubricated, by dipping in water, before tightening. The line should actually pull through, right back to the eye. (Thats why the loop is formed by being passed through the eye. It prevents the lure coming adrift.)
Next cut the hook end of the elastic band, so the ends spring apart. This is why I turn the band inside out before starting. The outward turn will cause and enticing slap, when drawn through the water.......... just like a booby rattle........
:sunny:
As I say, I've been using them for years. Most skippers smile indulgently when they see them......... and then quietly snitch a couple as I leave the boat............
My next stage of development is to drill a magnetic bead and include it between the eye and band............ :win:
