I've recently bought some good quality lead moulds that make 3 different size ball weights. I have a load of lead ready and may get some spare time this weekend to have my first go. Is there any hints or tips anyone can pass onto reduce the risk of almost certain personal injury &/or give me the best collection of ball leads in town! Thanks

Most important thing to remember is to always heat up the mould before pouring in the lead.

Dont put any damp lead in the pot with the molten stuff, it is liable to explode, and always wear eye protection. Might sound a bit nancy but you cant replace your sight.

Make sure the container you are going to melt the lead in is stable.
Use a ladel, dont pick up the container and pour it into the mold.
Heat mold before you pour any lead
Use eye protection.
wear heat resistant gloves or glove. i use the white oven gloves.
keep work area well ventilated, old lead gives off some nasty fumes.
Keep the mold clean you will get better leads.
Dont let the molten lead get too hot,
100% concentration is a must, or you will have a mishap, like picking up something thats very hot with a bare hand, and i can tell you it bloody hurts, :dummy:

The lads have pretty much covered everything. All I'd say is that you get a good face mask; one of those, which absorb fluids. That way you run little risk of ingesting lead fumes.......and do it outside!

Water & lead DO NOT mix !
If you are using old lead pipes - make sure they are dry & no water trapped in bends etc.
Wear glasses & gloves - molten lead bloody hurts !!!
Ladle - use a plumbers ladle - quite cheap and hold enough lead to pour up to 8oz ...
