Is there a downside to groundbaiting? I had a mate report that a angler that constantly groundbaited killed off the fishing for his entire party by encouraging a mass of doggers to the back of the boat too big for any cod to bully out the way. I'm a firm believer in the benefits of groundbait but this did raise a point, will groundbait switch on only certain fish? Would your target species bother to bully a pack of doggers out the way to get to your bait? Will certain elements (tide, depth etc) cancel out any groundbait advantages? Whats the best method for groundbaiting in deep water? Interested in your thoughts, thanks.

i like the idea of groundbaiting. dropping a carrier bag with some squid and fish bits tied to a pound of lead and shaking it about abit does wonders for bream fishing! try it! also try using cooked rice in with it ;D from the shore it works very well when float fishing for gars/mack/scad ect. most fish respond well to groundbaiting. chucking chunks of frozen mackerel in (frozen so it sinks and the guls dont get it) works well when fishing close in for bass.

Certainly no harm in getting a scent trail going IMO. Once the fish are feeding - job done. I like to get get a bit down just as either tide gets going after slack water.

Very intresting. Cant say it has helped me from the shore. No concrete proof anyway. I have just found that it sends the crabs silly. Obviously the scent must help in some ways but i think one lump of bait must send off just the same amount of smell. A spoon of soup smells just the same as a whole bowl full. Most of the best anglers on the beach i know never use it.

Little & often then to keep a scent around the back of the boat. I know alot of anglers that zip-tie an onion bag to the anchor full of mushy passed its best re-frozen bait. Cant hurt I suppose.

I have tried mashed up mackerel and squid mixed with fish oil, frozen into sausage shapes, I put it into PVA bags and tied it onto my lead, bit of a grind though,

it works in shore for the bass like on bembridge ledge were your not in very deep water They were in very deep water but the groundbait was put to the bottom by means of a dropper. I like the idea of groundbaiting very much but just wondered if its possible that we could be doing more harm than good?

I ground bait when I have plenty of bait and results are good.. try to do it every 20 mins and give a good portion! I freeze down any squid I have left and use this along with diced pout and mac. I use this bait droper.....filled to bursting! www.bait-dropper.co.uk/about.htmIf you are catching loads of dogs/bream and other muck then lay off baiting till they thin out.... I use dropper whenever poss and not just when targeting bass...cod/ray/conger seem to like as well.... I have done it no probs with good results in up to 80ft depth.. If I fished deeper water I would still try it out...
