I know that Tohatsu have a bottom of the pile reputation in the outboard world but are they really that bad? Why are they the cheapies out of them all? I heard that they are tied-in with Nissan??? Cheap & nasty or just not as refined as the front-runners?

A mate at our club has a 90hp Tohatsu that must be atleast 8 years old. He is one of the most active members in our compound, he goes miles out on his own without any probs so he must have faith in it. It sounds a bit agricultural but is obviously reliable. It's quite a compact size for the hp too.

Tohatsu are Nissan, the oldest outboard company in the world I think?
I will never sell my 9.8 2-stroke Tohatsu, its brilliant - light, reliable, quiet and economical.

I think you will find solent that Tohatsu manufacture Nissan marine outboards. Tohatsu have been building engines for 80 years +. a bit of useless info, the world record for crossing the Atlantic ocean using the smallest engine was achieved using a 2.5 hp Tohatsu

Tohatsu oputboards are sold as Nissan in the States, but for some reason were not allowed to sell them here under the Nissan name.
