I,m not a multiplier man myself and I need to start looking at getting a couple of reels, instead of borrowing them from my mate all the time. I have a budget of around £60 per reel and was wondering if anybody had any advice on what I should buy, was looking at the Penn 850 surfmaster or shimano aerlex. Your comments would be much appreciated, thanks, Chris

aerlex aerlex aerlex all the way mate, you wont beat them for the price. got three of them for carp fishing although they started out as seafishing reels. they have been abused over the last 12 years and i have never had a problem with any of them. on top of that i have never once serviced any of them. they hold plenty of line, have an excellent line lay, cast very good distances and have plenty of winching power. absolute brilliant bits of kit that i will never get rid of and have not got a bad word to say about them. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Suggest you avoid the Penns, there have been a number of bad reports about them, my mate had one and the drag adjuster fell to bits. Personally I have found the better Okumas and Diawas quite reliable and I prefer the latter.

Daiwa & Shimano seem to be good on tough fixed spools. A point worth noting is to look at the spec's of some of the salt water badged reels & then see if there's any difference at all from some of the freshwater equivalents. I've noticed some dont differ other than the grease their loaded with.

Well I bought myself a couple of reels at the weekend, I didn't go for the surf-master or the aerlex I went for the shimano Navi 8000xsa. They are a little better than the aerlex, and are a lot smoother, a good entry level reel. Just need some good weather now so I can go and break them in

shimano Navi 8000xsa are far better reels then the shimano Aerlex's
But for a reel at a great price then the MITCHELL Avocet Big Surf 6500 Reels are spot on
