Hi guys,
I've been thinking about getting a boat in the future and obviously wondered about storage.
Firstly if I got a small boat to start with say 13ft, would it fit in my garage (I think its about 16 - 17ft long) in the trailer with the outboard on ie. whats the total length roughly?
Secondly, if I managed to get a space at a boat club, they generally have a condition that you need to remove the outboard - how do you store the outboard ie is it at the club usually or can you stick it in a car? I imagine its a nightmare to remove a 40? What do you do?
Any replies appreciated....

Im not sure if someone has been pulling your leg but what would be the point of having your boat in a club that required you to remove your outboard to keep it there? The idea of having your boat at a club is usually for the ease of getting afloat.

Some clubs and compounds dont have much if any security and to remove valuable stuff maybe a choice option, as said a 40hp is a bit of a job but they will go walkabout if thieving gits get an opportunity. The answer is to sort out a club with the best security you can, or can afford and then to make it as difficult to remove the engine as possible. Just having an outboard lock may not be enough as a chainsaw round the transom is quick, so a good metal piece across the transom will wreck the teeth on most chainsaws.....just my thoughts.

I thought the same ie whats the point if younhave to take it off each time.......but here is copy of a bit from one club I'm looking at.....(taken from their application form) "Outboard motors must not be left in or on boats in the compound at any time. "

Id suggest looking at a club that has better security. Far too much hassle involved in removing & refitting anything other than your aux outboard. As to a 13ft boat on a trailer with outboard, im guessing a 16-17ft garage would just do it, take a tape measure though because it could be tight. Do plenty of research into the various compounds as some are better than others, as an example i know of one that charges around a £1000 a year for the use of a tidal controlled slip, & you get little else for your money. Others have more rules then the E.U & some require you join but possibly wait a year or so for a space. That said if you can find a good one, & there are a few about, then in my opinion a compound is the ideal place for the small boat owner.

Hi, At a guestimate I would allow 4ft-ish onto the boat length for trailer length and engine depth. A point worth making is that if the engine is smallish (upto 15 horse) it will only be clamped on and will be light enough to lift off. Secondly, if I managed to get a space at a boat club, they generally have a condition that you need to remove the outboard - how do you store the outboard ie is it at the club usually or can you stick it in a car? I imagine its a nightmare to remove a 40? What do you do? Any replies appreciated.... Again, if the outboard is small, it is easy to lift off into the boot of your car. Alot of compounds will have secure engine sheds for smaller outboards. Obviously bigger outboards don't get taken off, any yard that demands it in there rules surely must be referring to smaller dinghy's with smaller engines. The clubs that I'm familiar with are very secure and its standard practice to leave boats in their spaces usually unlocked. The club I belong to has swipe card barriers, cctv and a night watchman, the boat space costs £150 a year.

Thanks guys, that really helps. I don't really want to fill the garage with a boat anyway, and would ideally like one over 15ft.
Obviously price for storage is a main concern and its good to know that you can get storage like that for £150 which I think is reasonable.
