Got a visitor in my greenhouse...comes out to sun bath every morning.... nice and snug in there, been living there for at least a year now If you look carefully at its tail end you will notice a slight swelling... we think this is where the bloomin dog bit it in the summer. he's a real toe-rag for things that move. My missus managed to get it free before he killed it. At least it survived the ordeal.

Nice one sunny, at least he won't be after your chickens Might be an idea to ask a vet about that bite though. Ask 1st mate as Grass snakes, as are all snakes are protected species and handling them is illegal. See what the vet says 1st.

I reckon it has healed now Davey... just got a lump in its flesh where he bit & shook it. Instinct I suppose, he does the same with the rats when he gets them. The wound is healed over and the snake is healthy looking. Plenty of frogs get in the greenhouse and there are mice in there as well, so it has a good food source. Nice to see though and especially at this time of the year as they are sluggish allowing you to get closer - with camera ! - than they would in the summer Found a nest of little uns in the compost heap last year... just hatching. So now we leave the compost alone until spring has passed; just in case

beats my resident slow worm population, although i would'nt be surprised if we had one under the decking by next year, plenty of rubble for them to hibernate and a countless supply of frogs from the pond

Snakes are one of those things you either love or are petrified of. Thankfully I like them. The one in the greenhouse is a small one compared to some I've seen in the garden.... the biggest go to around 5-6 foot. One had just caught a sizable mouse and was wallowing across the chicken field...... the chickens were going mad... following it and clucking like crazy. Poor old snake could hardly move with his fat belly and being constantly harassed by the hens I did ask the neighbors if there were Slow Worms when we moved in - they said no - and in the first year I saw 5 They were coming out of the ground to bask in the spring sun, just after hibernation. They are great to see and becoming increasingly rare. So if you have a population of them Eddy you are quite privileged.

we used to get alot of slow worms but for some reason i havnt seen one for about 2 years, i know the bastard cats like them and our street seems more infested with cats than ever before. a good suply of small stones just outside the back door keeps them on edge and away from my prize tench in the pond ;D

i tend to use the dogs for that....trouble is one of them is more than capable of killing said cats,i have to give them time to reach the fence before unleashing the 5-1/2 stone hound from hell
