Want to do this for the first time ever: Having removed the faulty (cracked) intermediate ring and obtained a replacement, I noticed that the old ring was not whipped on as we used to do ye olden days but taped on - the tape looks like a finely interwoven nylon material. This sounds a lot easier to me than messing about with whipping thread so I have tracked down an ebayer that sells said tape. Problem - how does one fix it permanently to the rod blank - I am thinking hot glue but is that the right approach anyone?

rich, mount the ring onto a piece of tape ..........bit like underwhipping it, protects the rod and gives the ring something to bed to and wont slip around, alot of casters just tape there rings on and i used taped rings on rods for years so it is ok

Answer to eddy: Ebay number is 230399884337, seems OK but not too sure what I am doing at present so sent the guy a question. Answer to BK17: Thanks mate, makes me feel a lot more confident but what adhesive to use is my problem - any suggestions?

as long as you under tape first i dont think it would matter rich what type of glue.....just a small amount tho on the ring foot then position in place before finishing off with your tape .

OK folks, for those interested, the ebay guy has come back to me and says the tape is self-adhesive - hope it's a bit better than standard electricians' tape but it's a small investment so not too worried. He says three or four turns will do the job then use a dab of nail varnish or super glue on the edges to seal it in. He also suggest bedding the ring legs to the rod with hot melt glue before wrapping. This lines up with what BK17 has already said but I think BK's plan is better so will be doing that instead. Hopefully will add another post in a few days to let you know how successful I have been. Dropped into the tackle shop today, told them all about it and asked if they had any advice. Paul was quite surprised that rings are being taped on these days but he did add that he has only ever repaired the odd hi-end rod with whipping thread and most of them have been a few years old.

OK guys, received earlier mentioned tape today. I must say that it does seem to be like slim electicians' tape but it does seem to do the job. I stretched it a little as I wound it on (as the guy suggested) and it does seem to stay put and make the ring legs stay put too which is what matters. Now I can't presently state what it will turn out to be like in the long term because I haven't yet fished with it for say three months in beach conditions. I think I will put a dab of hot melt glue on the "legs" before doing a "final" job (as the man suggested) and try covering it with a bit of nail varnish but even if I do have to re-do it in say six months, at £2 for 60 yds, it can't be bad.

Nail varnish will perish in a few weeks. Use clear dope. Most good tackle shops stock it.

Hey, thanks for that olsmelly, must say I did have some concern about the nail varnish, will be down the tackle shop this morning to get some dope. (There are often one or two dopes in our tackle shop LOL)
