After a very tackle hungry session friday night i broke my reel. I hit a snag again on the way in n tried everyfin to get it free but failed. So i gave it some slack n hit it which broke the weld that holds the reel to the rod on one side :bash: . Does anyone know if i can just have it welded bac on??? or will it never be as strong again?

You may find that welding it distorts the frame, if that happens the reel wont run properly again. But having said that its knackred anyway!

That sucks mate. I take it the reel is well past sending it back to Abu? Sounds like you may need to get yourself a bomb proof SL20SH for sessions like that.

I have done the same, broke just one of the welds on the foot. I just whipped mine back onto the bar with about 10 half hitches of 60lb leda. It worked a treat until i found a new cage ( cheers chiv )

ive gota cage rich if you get stuck.......
it does happen quite regular with abus, little bit of corrosion and bang,or just a crap join in the first place....... the reel foot gives way , ive hada couple welded with useable results , but not great .

unlucky mate i've seen this happen on numerous occasions esspecially with reels used on the boat , the modern abu welds aren't the best , shame for such great reels .

If you get stuck in a snag again let a load of slack out but wind it round a bit of broom handle or something (I usually use my hand in my smock sleeve but I'm a doughnut ) and walk backwards, it's not healthy to let the reel take it especially if like me if you regularly use 30lb line.

I'm pretty sure that the Abu frames are Brazed or Sil Soldered - Should be ok to repair using these methods if not distorted too much...

Havn't had it back off BAZ yet as he's bin busy, the cage itself doesn't look distorted at all its just come away at the back joint. The father in law might have sumin in his shed i could used to bodge it bac together with. What is the best method of doing this? if all else fails i will bite the bullet n get a new cage...
