 I'm still kitting my new boat (Orkney Strikeliner) out for it's first trip this spring. It's fitted with a 25hp tohatsu motor which has both electric & pull start options. I shall also be running an all in one Garmin 551s colour fish finder / GPS /Chart plotter plus a VHF radio. The boat came with a standard 12v car battery & I'd like to carry a back-up battery. My question is, should I get another standard car battery or a 12v leisure type battery. Also if I go for the leisure battery option, should I go for an 95ah or 110ah model?

A leisure battery would be the usual choice. Do you intend to run a live bait well?
I'd say your engine would not take much cranking but you do have some drainage of power whilst at anchor, if you leave you kit running and especially on the drift with a live bait well running - hence the leisure battery.
In this instance, I would wire in a dual battery, switched system. This allows you to run out to mark on both, ensuring a charge. Then fish all day with No2. Crank with certainty for final run home on No 1, then run back in on both. IMHO you shouldn't need the 110 ah but if you don't mind the weight and you do a lot of live bait work on the drift, the extra £20 for No.2 might be well spent. Some may feel this is OTT for a small setup, but it's what I'd do for my type of fishing. Nothing like a bit of confidence in your kit. If you really want to have confidence, then get a battery monitor. You can see at a glance all you need to know.

If you decide on the twin battery set up id say the lowest you could go for would be 85ah leisure for your requirements. Id recommend a battery switch, they are fairly easy to fit, just make sure you use a cable type that's suitable for the batteries you choose.

If you need one, there's a wiring diagram for batteries on DaveS website, search for one of his replies and he has a link at the bottom.

My boat's wired with a Voltage sensitive Relay. The start battery (105Ah) is connected to the engine in the usual way. The Leisure battery runs all the lights, radio, Chartplotter etc. When the engine is off the batteries are isolated from each other, as soon as the engine starts charging and the voltage reaches 13.5 volts the relay connects them together so they both get charged. The cable connecting the two batteries via the VSR only needs to carry the max charge current available from the altenator, I used 40amp cable. Attachments:

Cheers for the advice guys. In reply to the question about running a livebait tank. I don't think theres enough room on a 16ft Strikeliner. Unless anyone tells me otherwise?

i'm planning on putting a livebait well in my orkney 520 which the same size as your boat, I know a few of the guys over at pbsbac have wells in there 520s. I think they use the 60l barrels so thats what i'm going for

Invested in a 115AH Exide leisure battery yesterday. Local branch of Mole Valley Farmers is doing em at £98. Boats just about ready to launch now. Just need some decent weather....

hi ian same as above if/when you start nite fishing the lights and other silly bits and peices you have running will flaten a small battery in a few hours, so id for 110ah battary (or 2 85ah) and have it set up so you can keep it seperate from your engine battery while at anchor. so then you can start engien with out worrie. nothink worse than a brake down you could have stopped so easy
