Lovely weather for working on the boat… just not warm enough to do the glasswork… unless !!! I needed to put the base in for the new bilge pumps. The boat came with a tiny pump that didn’t work very well and was just loose in the bilge, tied down with a bit of string. There wasn’t on a float switch; so rain water could collect, requiring regular attendance. The solution was to install two heavy duty pumps, one on a float switch – permanently connected and the other operated from the control panel. Because of the V-shape of the bilge I needed to make up a plate on which the pumps could be mounted. Made from marine ply and glassed both sides, I then glued it into the space and using old hairdryers gave it a summers day Once set I then glass-fibred the edges to the bilge, for added strength….don’t want them flying about in there. The hairdryers cut down the resin setting time perfectly. A lick of paint and left to dry. I need to paint the whole deck and bilge at the end of the re-fit, so this will do for the time being. Next up was to start fitting the electrics and antenna to the arch. So far 2 x Garmin GPS antenna, deck floodlights, anchor light, main antenna and AIS antenna. I also flush-mounted the reserve VHF radio on the underside of the console; moving it from inside the cabin.
