We had planned a plaice trip for Friday as the forecast all week looked good.It got to Thursday and yep you guessed it.The Bloody forecast had changed to windy and cold. But Saturday was now looking ok.
So arranged with Mark(YemaKram) to meet him at Eastney at 7am Saturday morning.Mark had driven down the night before and slept in the car ready for the early start.I got there at about 6.45 and found mark boiling up some water for his brew
We had a natter and slowly got all our stuff together then headed down to the beach. On the way down my bearings on the homemade kayak trolley decided to fall out,due to the corrosion from the saltwater.I think I will have to put my IN-EXCESSS plastic wheels on now which I bought a year ago just incase this happened ;D
We got out on the water for about 8am and the beach was already filling up with shore anglers. There was a few boats on the horizon by the fort so we paddled out near them as we thought they knew what they were doing.
Got to the point and anchored up.It was Marks first time at anchoring so I stayed close by just incase of any mishap's.I must say you wouldn't have thought it was Marks first time as he deployed his anchor like someone that has done it loads of times
Out went our rods all with giant rag worm on and sat there hopeful of a bite from the elusive red spot
Time went on and not even a bite the current had really picked up now, which I wasn't expecting not on a neap tide anyway.
You can see by marks anchor buoy how the tide was flowing.
By now there was about 20 boats out there all trying for a plaice.I dont think they were having much luck as they kept moving locations.
The sea temp was way down on this time last year only showing 5 deg on the GPS/FF.
We carried on fishing for a few more hours and eventually the sun made a brief appearance which was welcomed as we were frozen.(so much for the nice warm sunny day.But they were right about the light wind.)
About 1pm I decided to drift fish as the tide had eased right off but there was a slight wind against tide.So I deployed my home made carrier bag drogue ;D which worked a treat, and drifted for about 20 Min's.
I did end up with a nice double shot though. But the whelks were smaller than last year ;D ;D
It was nice to get out even though we didn't catch and we were cold.
Somehow I dont think the Bream will be in at the end of March this year
The plaice are very late in so will the rest of the summer fish I think.
Well thats 2 trips in 2 weeks and 2 blanks.
I think next weekend it will b just a paddle.
