I recently bought a nice little boat and it came with a yamaha 28AE outboard. It has an electric start but no means of charging the battery. I have looed in the manual and it looks like there is no feed off the engine anyway so I have no means of charging the battery. I have a new HD battery any idea how any starts i would get out of it? Or any tips for me such as a solar charger etc..
I plan to make sure the battery has a full charge before I go out or is it best kept topped up with an optimiser?
thanks in advance.
Dave.

I keep both my boat & motorcycle batteries topped up with an Optimate. Works OK for me...

Sounds a bit strange having electric start and no charging, self defeating.....even my manual start aux' has a charging circuit. Think I'd be down to check at a dealers/service centre if it were me.

Must have a charging cct or no spark.Put a voltmeter across the batt while running .more than 12 v then charging .If less then eventually the batt will drain while running ..not good at sea.

It has a pull start as well so its not really an issue. It was just a surprise to see no charging unit. It is an old yamaha 28AE I have looked at the seril number and compared on line (644 58718) and my best guess of age was 1979. Anyone know anything about it or indeed if it is supposed to have an out put, it does not mention one in the service manual mind.
