Thursday night and parked-up at 18:00, wind gusting to 25kn, didn't look pleasant but doable. Phoned Milo as we'd previously arranged to meet and advised him of the less-than-perfect conditions, said he'd come-on down anyway. 15 minutes later phoned back with car problems and decided to abort. I hung around for another hour then gave it best, not much much fun on your own in a blow. Probably drop out later but then there was work on Friday. Bit cheesed-off after bailing the Wales Tope meet at the weekend due to weather, but that's fishing.
Friday evening and PM from Richie, inquiring as to if I'd been chasing Smut's, said nearly , and might try overnight if the wind dropped out. He and Lozz were going down for 22:00, couldn't miss out on that, even if it was windy.
Wind obligingly eased after 21:00, sat about in Lozz's camper and caught-up on the recent fishy stories before launching in the last half of the tide, around 23:00. Didn't go far, Lozz getting bites straight-off and Richie seeing the first of the night, much chuckling and splashing in the darkness behind ;D. Weed bordering unfishable, Lozz cursing a couple of missed bites, nothing much doing where I was. Richie into a second, followed by Lozz's first and finally some action at my end, *£$% Dogfish on Squid. A second Dog next cast, so switched both rods to crab.
Had a dropped run, cursed that, then Lozz in again. The tide topped-out and weed settled, click-click and zzzzz, in this time ;D. Cracking fight from the first of the year, no exaggeration but took at least 5 minutes to beat on a 6lb rod with 6500! Ran backwards and forwards, while staying on the bottom and pulled the Kayak around, terrific. Almost disappointed when it finally surfaced, thought it would be 15lb at least, more like barely 10 by the look of it. A nice 'not-so-common' Common, returned to fight another day:
Tide abruptly changed to ebb with the Kayak swinging around in less than a minute, a couple of minutes later and I'm in again, nice long run, then off, bugger. Weed picking-up and not for first time, the wisdom of using two rods while Smutt fishing called into question? Fish on both rods ;D, parked the one that seemed smallest in the rod holder. Bit of battle with the other, soon found out why, the lines were tangled and dragged both fish in on the one rod. Two identical small Starry's of 2-3lb, one completely trussed-up in the line and the other dragging it around. Cut all the line away, wanted a medium Starry for the pot but these really not big enough, so returned. Weed building and 02:00, could hear Richie wrestling with his anchor in the distance, cue pack-up and head-in.
And my anchor was fun too, all the weed that had collected around the warp during the flood pushed back-up the line and had to be cleared before retrieving.
Lozz down with Trudy for the weekend, left them and Richie camping over at the mark before heading back to Selsey or Browndown today, that'll should be an interesting report.
Cracking night, Tanners on form with a week yet till June, can't be bad and thanks for your company lads and lass.
Cheers
