This is the time that keeps me sane through the long winter months. After several false starts during April and May, Lozz PMed early in the week, we'd both been watching the pressure charts and Thursday - Friday looked doable. With Marcj's words ringing in my ears, “you've got to take the weather window's, May could easily be blown-out”, I hit the road Wednesday evening for the 5 hour drive to Wales. Arrived with the wind still blowing strongly after dark and the sound of surf from the shoreline, Thursday might not be so good. The day dawned bright with light winds, surf virtually gone and Lozz parked-up, breakfast on the go, game on.
Met Pete from the South Wales forum, not been Topeing before, he was in for a treat. Lozz pointed out our usual mark on Pete's GPS, no co-ordinates. When we paddled out an hour later to join him, he'd actually anchored pretty-much bang on the mark. Pete had no less than 5 fish by then and fighting one as we arrived.
Bit lumpy on the water, settling from the previous day. We were into fish straight away, Lozz had a couple, I had a couple, nothing huge but a good size.
The dogs became a problem and I moved further down tide. Then dropped fish after fish, must have lost 5 or 6 before switching to half Mackerel and a further 4 making it to the Yak, best around 35lb, most T - barred off alongside, had a couple bite through the leader, and boated a couple to remove the hook.
Kevin joined us around 1pm while we were in the second run of fish and soon into runs and snap-off's which frustrated him throughout the first day.
Day two and Andyd joined us.
We'd made an effort to get out early in view of Pete's early success the previous day. Fishing very slow, Lozz an early run then nothing until lunchtime, Andyd boated his first ever, sadly didn't get over for a pic, or get there in time for his second either. Then both me and Kevin were into fish, boated one using my 6lb rod and 5500, much nicer than the 12lb and the reel drag smoother too, brought the usual rod as a spare. Kevin was struggling with gear again, a couple of fish snapped-off so offered him the spare. That seemed to do the trick, even with me & Lozz ragging him over drag settings, at one point the rod was wrapped under the Kayak, the drag jerked off and Kev' nearly went out the other side, ;D classic moments. He bullied a large fish straight to the Yak, needless to say a right old tussle alongside, but this one didn't get away.
Saturday began with a Cambrian Cafe Breakfast, gone were the two gay guys and suggestively arranged sausage and mushrooms, replaced by two ladies and more conventional offerings. We surmised they were lesbians, Lozz just had to ask. ;D
On the water V8Rob, Massivo and GB joined us. Still didn't have a Huss, soon rectified:
Slow again as Friday, Rob had one mid morning on a feathered-up Mackerel, followed by a little party Tope shortly afterwards. Mission accomplished, keen to be away early and bait gone by 2pm, bade farewell to the lads and made my last trek up the estuary at LW for the session. Fantastic.
Another action packed 3 days, great company in beautiful surroundings, really pleased to see Andy and Kevin boat their first Tope, thanks to all for making it such an enjoyable time.
