If fishing with a portland rig, what breaking strain line do you use for the rotten bottom?

I presume you are talking about boat fishing with a portland rig. If so go for a bottom about 5lb below your main line breaking strain.

An old bloke I used to know always used paper clips to hang his leads on when wreck fishing, etc. The skipper used to laugh at him but it worked!

The problem with paperclips and bread ties etc is that when you are fishing in fast tides the tend to spin. People using these will always get more tangles than those that dont. Infact the skipper on one of the charter boats I go out on wont let you use anything other than a bit of weak line as a rotten bottom for precicely this reason.

surely if you have a swivel attached to the end of the portland rig you wont get a tangle? !!!!!! as the lead spinning will be counter acted by the swivel! i have used them for years and havent had any tangles ! each to their own thou!only use them on the wrecks or rough ground . rich

Its more obvious is faster tides when bassing etc. If your lead comes into contact with another rig and its spinning then you have a big tangle. If it comes into contact and its not spinning and attached to piece of weaker line then it just bounces off and the tangles are much less frequent and alot easier to sort out.

You are right. minimum is best. I normally only get a rotten bottom with Abbott for some reason it does not agree with me ;D

Years ago. when fishing some very craggy bottom, it was suggested that it would be too expensive in lead, to fish............ so I scrounged all the laddered nylons I could and cut off the feet. These, I filled with sand and tied off........ It didn't matter how many I lost then!

I knew a bloke who used to use old lumps of iron - often old spark plugs and other bits from old car and lorry engines. Guess he lived near a scrap yard.
