1st trip out (hopefully) on Sunday for a few years and little rusty on things.
Going to be fishing with a Charter 1000 loaded with 30lb Crystal Whiplash but was wondering if a 40lb leader would be ok to use before my trace.

I like to match my leader material to mainline so it would be 30lb flourocarbon leader for me.

You ain't gonna cast far with 30lb leader! Estimate 10lbs strain per oz of weight and then add a 50% percent safety factor. Thus a 4oz lead really needs a 60lb leader, if you want to load up to hit the horizon!

I use 60lb flourocarbon for mine, but any heavyish line should be fine. I find that you need it fairly hevy because the running swivel can cause a bit of wear to the rig body after a while.

Nope. Tie a swivel to your leader, then tie a short length of 60lb line to this swivel. next put a swivel running on this heavier line between 2 beads, then tie another swivel on the end. Your hook length then comes off the running swivel, your rotten bottom onto the bottom swivel. If your running swivel was onto the leader your lead would sink to the bottom and you lure/bait would run all the way up you leader and be no where near the bottom.

Yeah it could be, I prefer a heavier line as when the fish are feeding hard the rig body can take a bit of a hammering from the running swivel. Also if you get tangled you can easily identify what is what. cut the leader, cut the hook length and pull it out of the tangle. Tie it back on to you leader retie your hook length and you back fishing before the drift is over.
