Sowley 29/07/11
Been a frustrating week with several trips curtailed due to problems back at base and new commitments emerging. Managed to get out Monday for a couple of Gurnards and bumped into Kenneth on the water, Lucky Rich on the land, ....good to see you again guys. Thursday night was another disaster, sorry Ben . On the plus side, while servicing the van, finally discovered the lingering aroma in the cab, a squashed peeler under the floor mat ;D, there for a couple of weeks it would seem.
Friday evening, with bait in hand, managed to sneak off for a quick session at Tanners . What a perfect evening, hardly a breath of wind, overcast and warm. The 'Gorilla pubes' were not too bad in the easing tide, 'smash and grab' chequer Bass bites from the off, on King Rag. Then the Bream began, chewing through a whole Squid in 5 minutes . Dusk and I'd pretty much had enough of the hooks being stripped for no result, headed into shallower water. Decided to paddle on down to Sowley and try for Stingray as no hounds in evidence.
Bumped into Kazyak on the way, returning from a successful trip further east, very pleased to meet you mate, sounded like a great evenings Bassing. His trip somewhat more successful than mine, I bemoaned the lack of hounds, we swapped notes before he continued home and I on to Sowley.
Headlights and a few shore fisherman on the beach at Pitts Deep and along the beach to Sowley. Headed for the shallow muddy part at the pond entrance, 200 yards or so east and south of the last angler, 5ft of water. Anchored-up and conscious of not making too much fuss or disturbance, kept lights and noise to a minimum.
Tide at a stand, a couple of 'smash and grab' bites and finally connected with something decent. Not a hound but felt reasonable, a second lease of life when shining the headlight at it, Bass. Nice fish, big head small body, 3-4lb, returned to grow bigger.
Ebb beginning and a jerky bite followed by a steaming run signaled a Smutt, went like a train, superb. Comments from the beach drifted over, “he's got another”. Nothing discrete about boating an 7lb Starry , especially when it refuses to stay onboard.
Rods back out and immediately another run, dropped and quiet again. Heard the clatter of a tripod on the beach, excited voices and had a little chuckle while listening to the sound of running footsteps on gravel, no doubt to intercept a fast disappearing rod.
5 minutes and another run, bigger Starry this time, fought like a Trojan in the shallows, leaped out of the water, twice on-board and couldn't contain it, despite all the kaffuffle remained attached and didn't break the leader. Finally boated and around 10lb, unhooked, camera shy and made a noisy exit shore-wards.
Headed back on midnight, suitably cheered after the nights entertainment!
Cheers
James
