I have been wanting to fish my Chesil wreck mark since early June but due to transport problems(which were sorted today but meant getting up at 6am) had to wait until last night.
I set off on the 60 odd mile drive excited at the prospect of a good bit of sport with one of my favourite species
Got to West Bay and the place was a lot more packedwith chavs than usual but had no trouble getting a parking place near the slipway just in time to watch a couple of women have a punch up while I ate my pre-launch fish and chips ;D
After all the entertainment it was time to get rigged up among all the questions from all the inquisitive people(you're going where!?etc ;D)
It was slightly more windy than was forecast but still no whitecaps.
Launched around 8pm and headed out through the centre of the harbour trying to avoid the lines all over from the guys fishing the harbour walls and got wished good luck as I headed past some of them.
Paddling the 7 miles to the mark was tough.Although I had the tide partly on my side the wind was in your face.
Eventually got to the mark after a few hours and had managed to feather up some mackies for fresh bait.I anchored up but had misjudged it and had to up-anchor to place me in a better position. Just what you need after paddling 7 miles, having to wind up anchor from 100ft depth
Anyway, better positioned and a fresh mackie flapper over the side expecting action in minutes but it was quiet.I remebered from previous visits that squid had outfished mackerel and added a squid to the bait and it wasn't long before ;D
Not really big for this wreck but the first of the year there for me,I was happy
It was quieter than usual though and I decided to put down a ledger rig with a 3/0 and 80lb line to see if there was anything smaller about.BIG MISTAKE!
I had hooked into a very powerful fish At stages of the fight it was a real tug-of-war and I really didn't think that the 80lb trace would hold out but it did ;D
Around 1am it was time to head back with the tide and when I arrived back at West Bay around 3am it was completely empty.Got home and to bed at 5am after a 23 hour day knackered but happy. ;D
