I had been hoping all week that the weather would be right to pop over to the IOW for a bit of Plaice fishing.
Unfortunately Thursday night got a message from my mate saying that the weather didn't warrant travelling over.
I was chomping at the bit for a good fishing trip and started looking at the alternatives.I spotted a bit of a weather window on the grounds that we targetted Porbeagles last year.
I went to work Friday still not knowing what I'd be doing and with it so late to plan anything but when I saw the Daily Star with the one up in Toon I was toying with the idea of launching for them solo.
I got home from work Friday and a miracle happened. My mate Craig who I'd done all my sharking trips with last year phoned up ;D He'd been looking at the weather and had a mountain of dubby like myself and was raring to go
It was a mad rush to dig out all the heavy gear and get on the road down to Cornwall.I didn't arrive there until 0130.I couldn't see the water but it sounded flat.I got my head down as Craig would be arriving at 0700.
At 0655 I heard a knock on the van, time to get up!
The surfers were out but by the time we were rigged they were making their way back.Craig had a chat with them and they said that the surf was going to be diminishing throughout the day which sounded great for us.
Going out wasn't bad at all,we waited for a lull and made our way out almost out through the waves and a huge one came out of no-where and crashed straight over me Luckily I managed to hit it head on....I was wide awake now ;D
We slowly headed out to the mark a couple of miles out.I say slowly as both the yaks had their front hatches loaded with dubby.
Got to the mark and the anchors went down, both of us opting to use the quick-release method incase we needed to sleigh ride a big fish into submission
Balloon rigs went over and the dubby trail was started.
Whilst at anchor we managed to feather up more mackies and when I put a bit of mackie on the hooks I caught this little beauty, a new species for the years tally.
followed closely by his little brother ;D
Also had Scad,another year first
I was sat there having decided to fish a baited feather rig whilst keeping the constant dubby trail going.
So there I was,rod in holder chilling out and suddenly the kayak lurched over as something was trying to pull the rod in
I got my rod out of the holder-just! and before I could release the drag I had been snapped off
We had been plagued with Tope here on previous occasions and deciding Tope to be the culprit I rigged up a tope trace(I'd only brought one aboard along with a few feather traces)and lowered it to the bottom with half a mackie.
After a few minutes fish on
Another new species for the year.
A storm came over but soon passed
Had a Tope run shortly after and my only Tope trace broke So it was back to the baited feathers for the smaller stuff.
Big mistake ;D
Got hit by a Tope ;D
Luckily it wasn't too big and I managed to get it aboard. My first of the year.
After slack it went really dead and we decided to head in early, wondering all the paddle back how the surf would be at landing,we needn't have worried, the waves had died down.
A great trip with a good mate, four new species although the only big fin I saw today was on a surfboard.
